ELECTRONICS INTERNATIONAL R-1 Digital Tachometer. Removed from my plane when I did a full panel makeover. Working fine when removed.

This is set up for a 6 Cylinder engine (was on my IO-520). My plane is 14 volts.

$100 firm. Seller pays shipping or free pickup at KFUL. Possible free delivery if you are based in SoCal.

Here's a link to a page describing the instrument in detail -

Might go without saying, but you might want to mention how many cylinders this is setup for.

Thanks for the tip Seth.
This was used on my A36 - 6 Cylinders

I had assumed that RPM was RPM, regardless of the number of cylinders in use?

It might depend on where the tach is driven from. As I recall, 6 cylinder mags run at 1.5 Xs crankshaft speed whereas 4 cylinder mags run 1:1. Having said that, it seems EI would have anticipated any compatibility issues between the two and may have an internal 4 or 6 cyl switch. ? An interesting question but I'm too lazy to research the correct answer.. :peace:

These tachs are connected to the P leads and pickup the number of pulses to calculate the RPM. Since each 6 cyl engine has 6 pulses per 2 crankshaft revolutions and a 4 cyl engine has four they are not interchangable. Mags rotate at 1/2 engine RPM. If this tach is sent back to EI the number of cylinders can be changed, the starting tach time can be changed and the max RPM can be changed. EI has a single set fee for this and an additional fee to change to LED lighting if not already.

EI is helpful and Dave Arata posts on Beechtalk frequently.

Just chiming in to say I bought an M-1 (same form factor, but for manifold pressure) secondhand and sent it to EI to be reconfigured for the flat fee. Turnaround time was quick, great service from EI.

I only know this because I have this tachometer and EI accidentally sent me the 4 cylinder version on my initial order. I had to send it back and they converted it to a 6 cylinder model. It cannot be done by the end user.

The quick way to tell what this tach is set for is to look at the label on the unit. The number on top, 6R30G270 is broken down as follows. The 6 designates 6 cylinders. R30 designates red at 300 rpm at ow end. G270 designates green range to 2700 rpm.

Our R-1 is cylinder specific, as well as ignition specific (magneto vs. electronic). However, the tachometer can be rebuilt for a new airplane (ignition type, number of cylinders, ranges, tach time, etc) and the cost to do so is $125.00, plus shipping.

Dave,
So then my understanding is that this unit will work in any 6 cylinder plane with dual Magnetos, but if someone has a 4 cylinder engine, or an electric ignition, then it would need to be sent to you - Have I got that right?

John,

That is almost correct.. The red line and green lines would also have to be set unless the new user also has a redline that is identical to your IO-520.. These are part of the "operating limitations" that are required by the FAR's and have to match your Owners Manual or POH. Just saying.
