"DeJoy has said repeatedly that the Postal Service is in a financially untenable position and needs to rein in expenses. This past week, it reported $2.2 billion in losses during the three months that ended in June.

Postal leaders want at least a $10 billion infusion from Congress as well as regulatory changes that would end a costly mandate that they fund in advance billions of dollars in retiree health benefits.

“Without dramatic change, there is no end in sight, and we face an impending liquidity crisis,” DeJoy told the Postal Service’s governing board Friday. "

"Retiree Health Benefits" - nice if you can get it.

You can check, but on the Care Act bill, the US Post office got 20 billion in aid, as a gift, plus they got an undisclosed amount from the PPP... which I am sure is extremely high...
They are very badly run, but I am sure the problem is not there...

They got a 10 billion dollar credit line and they most certainly were not eligible for PPP.

Let’s see. The US Government running a service related business that can only adjust its financial parameters by congressional edict. Add unions, civil service entitlements, political posturing etc to the mix. What could go wrong?

New appointed boss has cut off overtime, and deliveries postponed to next day. from WaPo:

"Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer said Thursday that changes imposed by the new Republican postmaster general “threaten the timely delivery of mail - including medicines for seniors, paychecks for workers and absentee ballots for voters - that is essential to millions of Americans.”

In separate letters, two Montana Republicans, Sen. Steve Daines and Rep. Greg Gianforte, also urged the Postal Service to reverse the July directive, which eliminates overtime for hundreds of thousands of postal workers and mandates that mail be kept until the next day if distribution centers are running late."

An ongoing debate whether this slowdown is to inhibit vote by mail initiatives.

There is no doubt that things have slowed. Priority Mail sometimes a week, personal mail box empty on alternate days...

Problem is that USPS is bleeding red ink all over the ledger. Has been for years. Do we keep believing it will run forever or privatize it or????

The Postal Service is a service, not a for profit business. I find it bizarre that people have accepted this perceptual transmogrification as normal. No one asks for the Air Force to show a profit.

We have been waiting for a mailed package that was scheduled to be delivered 2 weeks ago. Other packages had multiple delivery exceptions, including a textbook for my daughter. No mail at the house for 3 days. I recently ordered some things from Aircraft Spruce and changed shipping to UPS even though a much higher cost.

Of course, now we know where some of those delays originated. Should be an interesting next 2 weeks for the Postmaster General.

I wish this was posted elsewhere, so a "like" could be added.

I used to be in a guard unit with a NY postman, who claimed he drank near a case a day from his customers. On an annual encampment that SOB drank my scotch... hard to keep up that need, I guess.

On the subject, Univair shipped my tailwheel spring about a month ago. It still hasn't shown up on the tracking page.... ( the bushings came in a week though) USPS.
Edit: and yet..today I checked and it said today is the day... not much tracking...

I’m still waiting. It’s been two weeks on a 2-3 day priority. I suspect that USPS employees are slow walking and misdirecting packages in protest and very much so on purpose.

And my son placed an order on Amazon around 7pm last night that was delivered around 9am this morning...

And I ordered some sunglasses that “shipped”last Tuesday. Best USPS can tell me is “in-transit”

For me, I think shutting down the USPS would be an overall positive. It would force some of the archaic companies I must deal with (say the gas company) to jump into the 20th century and email me bills. Innovative new companies would pop up to fill the needs abandoned by the removed USPS. If it turns out it really costs private industry $1.50 to deliver handwritten thank you cards - so be it. Let’s not subsidize an inefficient system.

Our city tries to be progressive and provide mass transit when the market doesn’t demand it. System was horribly insolvent. So, big tax increase and a big building spree. I wonder if those busses that had 3 riders now have 1 rider. I wonder how many bus drivers were laid off like restaurant workers. I wonder but don’t ask - I really don’t want my head to hurt.

So Chase can send me a hat Priority Mail from Washington and it takes 5 days to get to Georgia. And still, the box I sent to Texas on the 29th of July is still " in transit" from Jacksonville, FL. Forrest Gump could have jogged it there and back himself in that time. Literally.

I have not received regular mail since last Thursday. We get mail every day including Sat historically. This about on par with the cat pissing on the pillow to prove a point; Postal employees are pissing on Americans to communicate their discontent.

A package was shipped via 3-day Priority from Oregon and it just arrived in NC today after six days. That seems unusual in my experience.

I filed a complaint with the USPS today and put a trace on my package. Seeing that the Post Master just reversed course, I suspect things will return to normal quickly.

3 days , NJ to Chicago , 1 lb package . Happy with that.

It’s blown out of proportion. Last 2-3 guys I asked what’s reasonable.... gave a longer time . Plus - possibly Covid infected mail was at one time let sit for a day or two before handling. Early cautions.

Not exaggerated.

We send out 50 packages a day......a bit more than anecdotal for us.
Prior to a month ago, perhaps 1 package a month was lost or delayed. Even this government cynic was impressed.

This past month, we receive at least 5 calls a day from our clients asking where their package is.
The usual 2-3 day intercity shipping is now about 50% 2-3 days, 25% 7 days, and 25% longer.

We now explain to every client ordering products about the postal situation and give them the option to pay more for ups, pick up the products personally or take their chances with the mail.

It’s real.
