There are easily made with 040 PVC and the vents

Any details on components, etc. appreciated. Pictures would be great... A fire resistant build would be ideal...

Best,

Tom

+1

I would like to replace the standard Cessna vents in my 210 with the eyeball vents but the 1 AMU price for the complete set has stopped me from making a purchase.

The PVC pipe fittings you will find in the aviation section of your Home Depot or Lowes etc hardware store.

Standard 1 1/2 inch schedule 40 45 degree fitting (however if you measure the ID it is 1 15/16ths so it is a plumbers mystery as to why it is called 1 1/2).

The straight pipe is ID 1 3/4 and will need to fit into the 45 degree fittings (you probably figured that part out)

When you pull out the Cessna part you will be able to push in the PVC replacement (I used a strip of velcro (fuzzy side self stick) to on the straight pipe to get a good friction fit.

If it just slides in and out it will blow out when you close the eyeball vents. (lessons learned on takeoff) shocked

The Weimac fits in the 45 fitting if you dremel out the opening to just enough to screw the Weimac in (the metal threads create their own thread in the pvc) This is a trial and error system i could not find a reaming tool in my price range grin
Besides the 45 PVC parts are like $.39 so buy a few spares.

If you want to retain the "I built this myself" look you can avoid filing off the PVC fitting branding and "made in USA" molding marks (try to find the fittings with raised descriptions as they are easier to file off if you are going whole with the whole aviation look.) grin grin

There is an aluminum color Weimac instead of the Black (not available when I built mine and I was impatient) and that with a white PVC combination would be a bit less prominent.

edit: I forgot the science on the temp probe--
1. grab your probe and selection of drills
2. drill holes in wood to find the "tight fit" size that matches the threads on your probe.
3. Using the highly refined picture above drill the hole in the 45 pvc fitting so that the probe (and this is important) misses the straight pipe and "sees air" otherwise you will be measuring some average of air and PVC (probably makes the highly accurate Cessna gauge less accurate).

3.1 You might want to do this first before you "hog out" the Weimac end of the PVC.

3.2 Remember to buy a couple of spare 45s if your calibrated eyeball is less than precise wink

3.3 Don't forget to have a little fun. you are dealing with less than $5 worth of plastic -- there will be no other Cessna project that is this cheap

Copied from another forum!!

This. Is awesome!!

I'm going to try this but installing a Davtron OAT probe into the driver's side vent instead of the Cessna meat thermometer.

For $20, you can buy 1 ft. of 2” 2024 T3 Aluminum tube from Aircraft Spruce. Cut in half to do both sides. More air flow and less PVC to burn. Should be a tighter fit without Velcro. Or may just not fit? I will probably go this way and advise.

Decisions, decisions... The 45 deg. PVC union in the picture above is rounded. The one I bought today is angled. Looks better in my opinion but cost $2. Who knows?

You can order black anodized or even black plastic from steinair.com, $127 ea. SteinAir is a reputable vendor in the experimental world.

Best,

Tom

I’m project’d out after two years working every day on the Bonanza.

Let’s see.... $127 ea plus shipping for the adjustable vents. $279

$50 for plastic or aluminum, paint, glue. $50

2-4 hours labor at $5/hr  $20

Total. $349

I like my $300 deal (w/STC) better!
