Tommy, the valve is on top of the filter element. If you cut open your oil filter to inspect the filter for metal, you would see its a circular disc be able to press it open with you finger. I think it takes 11-12 lbs of oil pressure differential to open. The spring supports the circular valve and a U shaped metal bracket supports the spring. Very simple design. I imagine Tempest filters have a similar design.

I do remember Terry telling me to always use the magnets with his filters. I always use magnets on my Champion filters for the first 25 to 100 hrs after an engine overhaul. If I haven't found anything after 100 hrs I just cut the filters open and inspect them as others have posted on this thread earlier.

Thanks Bill. Great advice. I’v found the two orings now and purchased them the only one I can’t get is the seal at the bottom. A seal from a Champion filter will fit but it’s still too skinny and I haven’t the nuts to try it yet. The seal on the Capehart filter is not as tall and it’s wider. Terry said about 2013 he would have to make 1000 to make it come out right. They are a unique size.
Yes the magnets are one of the most important part. That’s a good idea to put the super magnets on the outside. Probably a little silicon to make sure they stick.
The last 3 filters I cut open I ran a super magnet all over the paper. Did pick up anything but it’s messy. The Capehart filter I’d open up in a shinny cake pan to look for stuff. The carbon would be easy to see. Never found any metal which I’m glad for. Findig the carbon was like catching hard heads while fishing in saltwater.
Take care I’m still looking for that seal. I may breakdown and have some made. Gotta see what it would cost.
