First run IO-550-E just removed from my President II Baron. Was a factory new engine, ran 2050 hours.

Just installed another brand new factory engine to replace it. This one runs well, has decent compressions, no metal in filters, no evidence of any problem....just made the decision last year when engines (IO-550 cranks especially) were in short supply that I would order a new one.

Engine located at HMP airport (south of ATL), and can be shipped.

$15,000

thanks

stan

Stan,

The E has the oil cooler in the front instead of the alternator?

That is correct. The E has front oil cooler and rear belt-driven alternator

Dave: Don't be spending your time on the forums. You have a Bonanza to get back in the air. At least post some photos of the inside of the tail cone you brought back into immaculate condition.

Further comment here on the SANDCAST 550E... That engine shares the same case as the 470 and 520.
It simply has a stroked crank to get the displacement. It is not a front alternator PERMOLD engine.

Chris - interesting information....

If I am following...
IO-470 is bore of 5" and stroke of 4"
IO-520 is bore of 5.25" and a stroke of 4"
IO-470MOD is 520 jugs on a case that started life as a 470 - is that right?
An IO-550 is bore of 5.25" and stroke of 4.25"
Are the cylinder assemblies of a 550 the same as those of a 520?

Has anyone ever tried to put an IO-550-E in a Bonanza?

Some of the STC’ed applications that I know of for the “E” engine is the Presidential II on the Baron’s, the Cessna 310 G with the Colemill conversion as well as at minimum one Grumman Widgeon.

Thanks, Frank

Hi Jim,
Funny, we were just talking about the possibility of a Sandcast 550 in a Bonanza today. Not done in a Bonanza to my knowledge.

Dave Boyd (above) recently talked to me about the 550 cylinders being the same as 520's but using different pistons for the geometry of the extra stroke. That makes sense and i'm going to check it out shortly with parts we have on the shelf.

The 470 was first fitted with 520 cylinders by TCM. From that point on they are the same engine with the exception of the larger bore cylinders. Cases, cranks and cams are the same. Few unique parts like a couple of counterweights, fuel divider and injectors.

:)

The thing I loved about the -E engine in the Baron was the altitude compensating fuel pump. Just leave it full rich all the way to cruise altitude.

On the 12 I0-550-E first run cylinders. How much are you looking to get?

Thanks
Mike

I have no clue? I was looking for someone close to me on the west coast.

I will probably just give them to LyCon in Visalia.
