Would like to hang on to it, but the times are what they are. Wanted to give a heads up here.
Aircraft is at
Don Smith/AerostarWorld in Alabama and I've given him instructions to sell it. Since all the books are with it there, I don't have all the logs and numbers here in front of me. Just trying to help him with awareness, so any specifics can be gotten from Don.
But from memory, 1450hrs-ish on one engine, 900hrs on the other. 1977 model. Aux Tank. A/C. Has new G5 and new Garmin GNX 375 GPS/ADS-B I just put in. I also put a new Garmin Audio Panel in as well. She has working radar. De-iced.
Fresh annual happening now and will be delivered with that.
Newly overhauled A/C compressor.
New door seal - now pressurizes correctly.
SuperStar II's are as you know the fastest (no VG's needed!) Aerostars ever made. And with contra-rotating props, it has no critical engine and no need for VG's. The cowl flaps have been modified to stay open all the time, so that eats about 5 kts off top speed, but all the switching etc is there if you want to re-instate the cowl flap actuating. Improves cooling and reduces maintenance to keep them open all the time, but at slight expense of top speed. Still faster than a 700 even with the cowl flaps open.
SuperStar II's used to be the red-headed stepchild of the Aerostar world, but with the buyout of Knisley and Hartzell by PE, the SuperStar II is turning into a better option every day - it has more readily available parts for turbos etc, and is easier and cheaper to maintain than the regular Superstar due to it not being hijacked by PE-owned suppliers. Has J2BD Navajo engines - easier to maintain one turbo per side than two, one actuator etc. Plenty of parts available.
Yes, the SSII does have two drawbacks - the single drive dual magnetos and the pain-in-the-ass-to-get-to-oil-filter are the two big ones, but the good news is there is a mod for both. Filter can be moved further down with an STC piping kit and the mags can either be switched to regular magnetos or have electronic ignition installed. If you stay with the single drive dual magneto, which works absolutely fine, just make sure to inspect the drive about every 500hrs for wear.
I have not flown aircraft very much since I got her last year, but our trip from Los Angeles to Alabama to get her to Don was uneventful and a joy. Always a pleasure to fly Aerostars, as you know. She performed very good, didn't drink any oil and all minor squawks have been addressed since. Paint isn't great and interior could do with a little tune up, but she's not the worst you've seen. Paint is 6/10 and interior is 7/10. Radios are old Collins and they work fine, but it was on my list to upgrade next.
PRICE: Looking for around
$140K-ish - or make me an offer I can't refuse;)
Feel free to call Don (334) 718-4949 for specifics or DM me for more general questions.
