1979 Aerostar 601P (Turbo-Normalized 290hp) Based at: KSGH Springfield-Beckley, Springfield, OH Asking Price: $120,000.00 or best offer
Most will want to upgrade the avionics. The interior (leather seats) look decent although the carpet could use a refresh. There is an issue with the windshield. Someone blended in three spots which I believe are slightly beyond the factory limits.

Nice looking Aerostar! If it wasn't pressurized I'd be on my way down to Ohio to look at it.

Sorry Fred, your engine description says intercooled. Just trying to reduce confusion!

Hello Fred, Are you sure your plane is turbo normalized and not turbo charged? I know that the non pressurized 601B’s, late 60’s, maybe very early 70’s were turbo normalized, but all 601P’s should have came factory with or been upgraded by now to the medium altitude 574-9001 and 574-9002 Rajay Turbos with automatic wastegates.
Thanks, Frank

The 601P used the IO-540-S1A5 engine which was shipped from Lycoming high compression and non-turbo-charged. That is why it is not a TIO-540 as specified.
The turbo system was added at Ted Smith Aerostar / Piper.
It is in fact turbo normalized and is a 29.5" MP engine at takeoff power. My understanding has always been that Turbo-Normalized means sea-level manifold pressure is the limit on power, and Turbo-Supercharged is above sea-level manifold pressure.
The later 602P engine, IO-540-AA1A5 was a 37" engine that was made by Lycoming to be turbo-charged, but the turbo system was added later by Piper.
I am not sure why the later TIO-540-U2A 350 hp 42" engines were not TSIO-540-U2A's - probably just some internal Lycoming thing.

Corrected the ad. These are straight IO-540-S1A5 motors, NON intercooled.

Added some photos of the panel. It does have ADSB, but really could use some avionics upgrades.

I guess I have always thought of TN being where you can turn it on and off, either with a cable, like the Rajay on a Mooney that I once owned, or with an electronic solenoid like the older 601B’s had, and I always thought of automatic waste gates and turbo controllers as being turbocharged, but I am “not correct”. I currently have one of each, a 601P with the IO-540-S1A5 that makes 29.5” MP and a IO-540-S1A5(MM) engines that makes 42” MP. Thanks, Frank
