One of my tenants wants to sell his 1939 cub. It’s been restored and is in good condition .
He says it has a 95 hp engine.
How would I establish a value and find a buyer, I have no knowledge about cubs.

I can’t put a price on it yet because I don’t know how to establish the value. This is part of a hangar sale. Plane is ready to fly, it just needs an annual.

There are usually a few Cubs kicking around on barnstormers and that's probably a pretty good source for comps (and also a good place to list it, outside of BT). SWAG: typical flying airplanes are 40ish, cream puffs are 70+ and projects are 15-20. Getting the annual sorted would help greatly, I imagine.

Thanks, it’s somewhere to start.

It’s at KCCR IN CA close to SF. The owner is 92 and I am talking to his wife who has no knowledge of aviation stuff.

Which variant of J-3?

It matters.

Maybe an 85, or a 90. Never heard of a 95.

Suggest you peddle it on J3-cub.com as well. Sniff out a gentleman named Bob Turner there.

Bob has a ton of knowledge of Cubs, and owns several.

Bonus: I believe Bob is from that area.

The Cub market is always strong. You could post a barnstormers ad with that one picture and the info you already provided and I bet someone would give you $35k as is/where is.

Start by getting the logbooks. There will likely only be a green airframe and red engine books (no prop logs unless its a recent prop O/H), but expect to have 2-4 of each type if its got all of them.

Go to the latest engine book and get the model number, time since overhaul, and when it was overhauled.

Go through the latest airframe logbook and find out when it was last recovered, and what fabric and paint process was used. Also get the time on the airframe.

If you can't get the books, find data plates on the engine and airframe and take lots of pictures and we can help sort it out and come up with a better value.

Make sure someone goes down the TCDS rabbit hole on ALL modifications as well as weight limits if it’s something other than a J3C-65.

For example, if it’s a J3L, the unwitting person might be facing surprises later.

(Words carefully chosen to avoid any appearance of stomping).

I wouldn't say stomping applies here. In order for stomping to occur, it would have to be listed for sale. It's not for sale yet because there is no listed asking price.

This. Some of the Cubs out there aren't remotely airworthy from a legality standpoint. Have the annual done by an IA who knows how to review the TCDS for compliance.

People hang all kinds of unapproved engines or engine components on their Cubs, and the AC type on the airworthiness certificate really can be an issue.
