I did because of the extra security of the chute, which gives me a chance at surviving if I lose an engine over terrain / at night. Would be amazing to have pressurization though, but not sure its worth the trade off of not having the chute when single engine in heavy IMC/at night/over terrain

My understanding was that with the efficient Malibu wing operating in the flight levels you should generally have a lot of options to make a runway if the engine quits. Obviously easier said than done in bad conditions but I'm not sure I'd want to pull a chute over the Rockies in February either.

I am sure there are some whom will get more accurate, but at 25k, the Malibu will glide 50 plus miles. I prefer the glide range of the Malibu over the chute.

The 50 miles at ~25k is about right give or take based on winds and how well the glide is managed and perhaps a few other variables. I just did recurrent training in my Mirage the other day and I was reminded of how remarkably the plane glides.

And the Meridian will glide 72.4 miles from that same FL250. It’s a different way of risk mitigation thinking/flight planning.

Questions for the PA46 guys:

How are you training for engine loss at high altitude since you also lose pressurization?

What sort of O2 setup do you have, since a mask is required above FL180?

Do you consider that without a mask an emergency descent is required down to FL180, or possibly 12,500 or maybe 10,000 for some folks, and that your normal glide of 2 (Malibu) or 3 (Meridian) miles per thousand must be calculated from the lower of those altitudes?

I practice the engine out maneuvers in the SIM (fly to the apt, circle down, at 3,000 ft turn outbound at 30 degrees, at 2,000 feet turn inbound)

Not sure how soon the cabin would reach 10,000 ft. after a power loss. Mine holds 5.5 psi rock solid and give a cabin altitude of about 4.5k at FL210 (rarely fly higher than that). An engine loss should not result in a rapid decrompression, I'd rather assume, we are talking 5-6 min until the 10k cabin altituted are reached (would be keen to learn of any studies).

I have the O2 generators onboard, so save on the way down.

I have the small aero ox bottle in the small cabinet behind the copilot. My plane had the canisters at one time, but I am glad they are gone.

Price reduced to 420k EUR / 450k USD.

Conversion to FAA registration runs at about 10k EUR.

Love it. But how far will the Meridian glide if you cage an engine while on the final approach course?

Further than a Bonanza

Just under 3.3* so if it is a steepish approach or if you are slightly above the glidepath it may be enough to get you to the runway.

Do you have an estimate of the cost to get it to the US after the conversion to a FAA registration?

Thanks,
John

Nothing from experience, I'd count on an extra 10k depending on weather
