My mission has moved towards a traveling airplane, so must part with my sunny day VFR flyer. This largely original Cessna 140 is in excellent overall condition and has been a fun and economical first airplane. It has been in Memphis since 2015, and the logbooks point toward a history in Texas, Oklahoma and the Midwest. Flies 100 MPH IAS at 5.5 GPH.

I was attracted to it due to the many thoughtful STCs/upgrades, full history, low airframe and engine times and overall condition. Also, I’m 6’3”, 220#, and there aren’t too many vintage tailwheel aircraft that comfortably accommodate a man my size. That, and I’m a sucker for a polished airplane!

Affirmative on the flaps. The 120 did not have flaps, the 140 does.

Like most vintage Cessnas, there are a million STCs available. Common upgrades include a straight O-200 swap or building a stroked 85 with a 200 crank. There are STCs for a O-290 and O-235 among others. The Cessna 120-140 type club maintains a full list, but it's behind a paywall for members only. Great type club and resources there.

Heater works well.

Empty weight is 965#, max gross is 1450#. Useful of 485#. I've flown it full fuel in the summer with 220# me and a similarly sized passenger with no issue.

The C-85 is the perfect engine for the 120/140. You don't see too many airplanes of that vintage with the factory motor and wheelpants, either.

With a C-85...it's adequate. Similar to a Cessna 150.

I'm not sure of the book numbers, as the POH for a 140 is about eight pages long. I fly off of a 3,800' strip, and takeoff performance is more than adequate. :D

I owned a Cessna 140 in the late 1960s and my first thousand hours was in that plane flying parts of the mountainous west. (New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, even the flat land of Texas once in a while).

They are great little planes. I'd have one today but my hangar is full.

But that was over 50 years ago. Maybe I've forgotten how it performs.
