Very nice!

Any estimates on what it would take for a 2700 hr pilot with a couple hundred turboprop hours, ATP and CFI-I both training and cost-wise? I have been following/tempted by these SP planes and still can't make sense of the lower acquisition cost compared to an older Meridian. I get it that the ongoing cost would be substantially greater.

I have got to quit clicking on these ads!!

Thanks.

I think 4-5 days and 10k tops to do type rating.

Plus about 10-12k for the airplane cost.

Plus the mentoring time before you can solo.

A typical number is 50 hours. That is what I was given despite 4000+ TT and 1600 MU2 time.

That is all done now, so I am able to fly solo now which is wonderful.

The mentoring time is useful and can be on trips with purpose, so it isn't all overhead. It does come with more complex logistics, namely scheduling the mentor. I call that "chartering the human".

Mike,

I don't believe the below is accurate for a 501 because it is natively a single pilot airplane. I think your massive and unjust mentoring requirement relates to your V requiring 2 pilots. Any sane person knows that if you can fly an MU-2, you can fly a Citation. Also, this is very dependent on the insurance broker going to bat for you. Worst I've seen was 25 hours for a guy with only 182 amphibian time and a fresh multi. He's turned out to be an exceptional Citation pilot BTW.

For a first time jet pilot, I expect 50 hours would be typical. I don't have a lot of evidence, 2 cases, myself and one other who got a 501 with past MU2 time like mine.

Sanity and insurance don't really go together.

Things are very different in recent years.

Honestly, I would not try to rush the mentoring time. While the plane is relatively easy to fly, there is a lot to learn and having a mentor is a good thing. I think 50 hours was about right for me.

The FAA requires 25 hours to get the single pilot restriction removed if done in the Sim. But my insurance required 35 hours with a mentor so the 25 was easily covered. But for me the 35 hours was well worth the hassle. I learned so much from an experienced guy that it more then paid for itself.

Mike,
Can you share what you paid for your mentor pilot?

Local guy whose "day job" is flying a Bravo.

$950/day for single day trips
$850/day for multi day trips

He did allow half day sessions for half price, say for a proficiency flight.

He is also SPE qualified so becomes a pilot I can hire to fly a mission without me, one of the reasons to get a Citation over an MU2.

My schedule had to work around his, which was a hassle.

Hey Michael, is there a link on this plane that I can send to my brother in law? This may be right up his alley but he isn't on this forum.

For anyone looking for a legacy Citation all I can say is Mike T is the real deal. I looked at a different 501SP he has/had and it was exactly as described. I don’t know HOW he does it. I just know THAT he does it.
