Hi Russ,
If the heater is warm when it's airborne they are both working fine. There is a substantial drop in warmth if only one pump is working. The PSI to the heater with one pump is 7 and I believe and it doubles to 14 with both pumps operational.
Cheers,
Matt

It may be tied to the squat switch, try that first before you mess with putting it on jacks

I appreciate the info. I'll verify with my A&P that it's intended to work that way. We may need to put it back up on jacks to verify both pumps are running with the gear up.

I don’t have my shop manual handy but my recollection is that the 2nd heater fuel pump and the blower are tied to one of the gear limit switches.

Hi Russ, our Barons have 2 heater fuel pumps for good reason. When the gear is down just one pump is in operation. Gear up and the second pump is activated as well to maximize heater output with higher airspeeds as more air is going through the system. As I recall with gear down and just one pump in operation, the Janitrol heater output caps out at 35,000 BTU’s. Gear up with both pumps working, the heater can achieve 50,000 BTU’s....

Sven,

Looks like the up-limit switch (see attached image)

I appreciate all the input, folks. I confirmed with my IA what y’all are saying. He said he misspoke when talking to me about the circuit, because it had been a minute since he had had to change those pumps out on the twin. Failed igniters and failed pressure decay tests seem to be the rule when looking at problems on those things. Fortunately, neither of those items were an issue for me this time around.

I still hold firm that the logic behind the circuit is odd, but it does make sense once explained. That seems like the path of least resistance, in lieu of a more elegant solution for a simple problem. If it works, it works!

Hi Russ,
The switch is under the seats near the gearbox and the gear retract linkage is what activates it. I have the schematic to go with this email from Harold Haskins Inc. I'd be happy to send it to you via email if you'd like, just PM me your email address. I recommend Haskins for help all the way around with heaters:).
Matt

Item 14 is called a blower switch, but it is actually the switch that turns off the blower motor and turns on the 2nd fuel pump when the gear is retracted. BOTH fuel pumps operate when the gear is up and locked.

Original ad updated with latest info. Airplane is back flying after annual.

The wife and I have agreed as of late that we are going to sell half of it or all of it. There in some slow rolling interest in both the partnership and outright sale, so if either materialize, I will update the ad.

If I’m not able to make it happen on my own before the end of January, I will likely go the broker route. If you have interest in this Baron, there may be advantages to working directly with me (tax advantages for casual sale from individual owner, depending upon your situation).

Logs available upon request.

Thanks and Merry Christmas!
Russ
