I don’t understand why this airplane is still for sale! I wish I had the money for it right now.

It’s because everybody is convinced they need a 520 or a 550! Yes, they are nice to have for those people at pressure altitudes above 3,000 ft. but if you operate off a field below that, a 470 engine (225 constant hp.) does the same thing at 11-12 GPH where the others are using upwards of 16 GPH and arrive at the destination 10 minutes earlier.

Jim, such a pretty airplane. Great job. I fly out of Bend, OR, with a field elevation of 3469 ft. Would the IO-470 do ok in the summer months? Typically mid to high 80’s and dry desert.

Hi Greg, just my 2 cents worth, I owned a K35 for just under 40 years the first 25 of which were with a 470 before upgrading to a 520. I flew multiple times to Henderson NV (Elevation 2,500) in the middle of the summer with temperatures in the low 100's and pressure altitude much higher. Wife, I and baggage probably around 2,800 lbs (gross I remember to be approximately 2,950). Never had a problem taking off and climbing. I also had her into Lake Tahoe in the summer, elevation 6,000+ with no issues.

To be quite honest the most significant difference I noticed between the 470 and 520 was the top end cruise as you got up higher, not in the takeoff and climb. After climbing 500 ft above ground level I backed the MP down to 25" and kept increasing the throttle as I climbed to maintain the 25". At around 5,000 I was basically wide open throttle. RPM as I remember was 2,450 - 2,500. At about 10,000 the 520 could cruise about 7kts faster than the 470. I suppose there are those out there with keener senses that can tell the difference between the 2 but for me it wasn't that noticeable. Regardless, I don't think you are going to have any problem with the 470 at Bend. Again, just my 2 cents.

Jim

Any replies to Jim's observations, from owners/ instructors who have flown both ?
The 520 /550 must use less runway to take-off than the 470 at any DA (density alt.) above 3000 ft. What do the POHs have to say ?
