Michael,

You sold this airplane back in late 2014 it appears. It has flown about 80 hours since. Could you relate the story. I may have a legitimate interest.

Yes it was sold locally in 2014, but I remained a partner, we just don't use it that much anymore.

Having previously owned (14 years)) an A55 Baron with VG’s and a Colemill President 600 conversion, I can opine with reasonable authority on the performance of Mike’s beautiful B55. I would still own that airplane today were it not for an ex-wife that demanded it be sold when we got in a crunch during the last “Great Recession”. It is an excellent performer that will deliver 190 KTAS while consuming 24 GPH lean or 195 KTAS/28 GPH rich. Mine (TC-270) did not have GAMI’s so YMMV favorably on this one. The VG’s as most know will allow the Baron to fly slow with much better aileron authority and comfortably come over the fence at 78 kts or so, touching down about 70, so making the first turnout a breeze. Fly it per the POH on takeoff and you’ll have a significantly increased margin between lift-off speed and VMC.

I never had any problems with the IO-520E’s other than a few typical cylinder overhauls at around 800 SMOH as I recall. When I bought mine it had around 270 hours L & R on Victor “Limited Edition” overhauls which were the smoothest piston engines I’ve flown behind. One of the best features is retention of the belt-drive alternators which is possible only with the sandcast cases. No worries about alternator drive failure, contaminating the engine which has bitten more than one IO-520 with the permold case mounted front alternator.

One more thing: takeoff acceleration and initial ROC is eye-popping with the mills turning 2850 RPM. There is a 5 minute limitation before bringing the props back to 2700 but it’s 5 minutes of pure grin.

If I was in the market today, I’d be on the phone right now with Mike and soon on a Delta jet heading to Florida.

I agree with all this, these are almost exactly the numbers seen in my '73 version of a B55 with this mod. 200 ktas at 7-10k is possible if you really want it, you need to be willing to run at 2600+ RPM ROP.

Do all Colemill 520 conversions retain the belt driven alternators?
