I met Chris R. and his fire breathing Baron in Ottumwa, IA for lunch today. I'm pretty sure we were the only action the airport had all day. It was a pretty day to fly.

Weird that you bring up the smuggling topic. Last night I was watching NARCOS and thought to myself. How many Twin Bo's died, are abandoned, or were destroyed in the last 50 years in Central America and South America? They seem like the perfect drug hauler, obviously proved by our newest Queen Air owner who is now Incarcerated.

My current Twin Bonanza N5674D was used at one point to smuggle drugs. It was confiscated in the early 90's and some of the original logs are now missing. I kinda chuckle each time we open up a new area of the airplane and wonder if a bag of pot or cocaine may fall out............ :bugeye: Nothing so far (Thank GOD!)

I purchased a damaged D50A many years ago out of New Mexico that had hit a large rock on takeoff and broke the nose gear off and mashed the props. It did quite a bit of damage to the nose section and nacelles. It was flying out of an unimproved strip in New Mexico and loaded with drugs. The Pilot fled the scene and left the airplane behind.
There have been many Sheriff sales in Florida over the years and several Twin Bonanza's were in those sales that had been confiscated for hauling drugs. In fact, there is an Excalibur in Nogales Mexico at a small airport there that was confiscated by the Federalies many moons ago. I still see it there along with what looks like a DC-3 and several other birds via Google Earth.

Sad to see them come to an end like this...................... :bat:

Gregg :pilot:

Mine was a drug runner too and seized. Then operated by the feds with big tip tanks for a while before it was donated to Racine County Community College, from whom Dick Ward bought it. Dick couldn't get FAA approval to fly with those tanks, from what I hear.
