Who's trading in their 696 for Gramin's new 795/796?

Interesting. I like my 696 a lot and I'd have to get some hands on time with a new product before switching.

It looks like Garmin is getting more competitive on the hardware side against the IPAD and other's, but it remains to be seen what they are going to do with the database pricing side of the equation. As I have currently use a 696, I would order a 796 in a heartbeat if the database pricing falls to a reasonable price for the 796. :cross:

While I have a IPAD with FF, I only use it for supplemental flight planning which it does very well.

Regards,
Ron

Here's some major questions:

What is the cost of the data? That was seriously hurting the 696, and the main reason I didn't buy, however, they did drop the data costs in half ... guess they got the message. If the charts and plates are close to the IPad, they will do well. However, I doubt it.

Is this unit ADS-B compatible? Would be a huge benefit.

However, can't wait to see one..... almost looks like a 750.

Mike

Is the subscription cost a part of the package price Garmin offers for the 750 and G500/600?

Russ:

I doubt it. I have that package and it doesn't look like it includes any portable units. Which kind of sucks. I would strongly consider this on my co-pilot side as a backup. Bill would kill me though. He really hates that stuff.

It is an aviation addiction to want to fill up all those empty spaces in the panel. :D

I might have missed it...

Will it show the flight path overlayed onto the approach plate?

Mike,

Why would I remove my iPad2 with Foreflight from the cockpit in favor of this new Garmin? Currently I have an Aera 510 on the yoke and the iPad on a mount over the center of the throw over yoke. If the airspace isn't complex, I leave the iPad off the mount and have it in the pocket for occasional consulting and have the 510 for wx and a supplement to the mounted avionics (530W). Is the unit much more sunlight readable than the 510?

What is the annual cost of the data updates? Is the unit available less the GXM 40 antenna/receiver since so many of us already have these units our airplanes?

Give me a reason to shell out $2500 for this latest and greatest.

Bob

Well, I could see why one would buy this unit. Price is about what the expensive Aera sold for and this has a lot of nice features, and certainly a nicer display for working around weather. Sure would be nicer than my 396, which I'd like to retire for something better. SV is neat, too, but I'd want to turn off those tapes.

The killer is if you wanted all the data and plates. I'd bet it's as bad as the 696. So, if you're a CSOB you'd keep the IPad anyway. I wrote them to see, we'll find out.

Now that I have foreflight, I want scanned FAA charts in the cockpit. I find the 696 IFR enroute charts not good enough.

Eric,

The 696 does not have the info that the real charts have, so it's not a good source for chart info. However, for "most" navigating it's nice (like the other Garmin portables) and will show airspace, wpts, wx, tfr which is probably the bulk of the stuff we need. What is doesn't have are a lot of the altitudes, and some other minor stuff that "may" be important.

Would be nice to be able to switch to the lo alt or sectional as needed, but not for 4x the price.
