There are reports of lock failure of some Delorme inReach units leading to at least one SAR response and significant expense to the owner of the unit.

Thanks. Mine seems okay. I would be unhappy to have SAR dispatched to my home and interrupting my tea with a $4,400 bill for services. :D

Seems like it's a physical activation while the device is being jostled around and defeats the lock switch? The temporary fix is to make sure screen lock is on, to reduce the likelihood of it being jostled "on".

Also doesn't affect the new "Plus" devices that garmin sells, only the pre-acquisition units.

As soon as the SAR folks needlessly activate a few more times, Garmin will get immense pressure to recall these. (But thanks for the heads-up. I'll be more careful until then.)

A friend of mine had a 10-year old ACR AeroFix go off while in the hangar with nobody touching it. Happened about a month ago. He got a call at home at about 9pm from an SAR person in Alaska. Since they reached him by phone, they didn't have to scramble the helicopters.

I kind of felt bad - I'm the one that gave him the device when I got my 406 beacon installed in the Bonanza.

The problem(s) may not be limited to any one model of device.

Hey thanks. I've got one too and use it every flight.
Time to rethink how I mount it and how I carry it to and from the airport.

Do these things not have an "Off" switch?

Yes they do but you have to know you triggered it before you know to turn it off. They are being triggered when they are off.
