I can't verify that all of this works yet, but this looks like the solution for the CSOB.

https://www.reddit.com/r/flying/comments/3fscia/the_11390_adsb_receiver_for_foreflight_or_pretty/

I had this sent to me by a CheaperSOB than me. I have the Stratus II and GDL39-3D and am feeling a little jealous.

I'm anxious to test this myself. I've got all the parts on hand and was able to set up my raspberry pi several months ago to be able to receive 1090 traffic information. I'm really interested in what the FIS-B weather looks like.

Won't be for several weeks as I am busy into my project/vacation season.

Thats only talking about the 1090 MHz traffic information. I've gotten that working fairly well on the ground for some time and have been wanting to try it airborne for several weeks. I think showed it to a few folks at the Idaho pig roast.

But the original post showed someone getting 978 MHz FIS-B weather information working. I'm anxious to see if I can get it working.

I have a Stratus 2 and I ordered the radio to build one of these. I already had the rest of the stuff.. What can I say; I'm a geek.

I'll give it a try next week and compare this to the Stratus II's results and report back.

I can verify it works. I have confirmed I get weather, haven't had a chance to confirm traffic yet. Trick is making sure the antenna is out the correct amount to match the freq. Can't beat weather/traffic for ~$100.

I've used both the Stratus and this, I seem to be picking up more towers now than with the Stratus, maybe better quality receiver/antenna?

Here are some pics from another Redditor.

Would be nice to mount over glove box with a belly antenna. Then you solve the heat and reception problem with Status 2.

I tried it all out. Very easy to get going. In flight weather works great, shows up right in Foreflight as you'd expect. I wasn't able to see any traffic. Obviously no GPS and AHRS like a real stratus. There are a few shortcomings but for < $100 it's hard to complain.

GPS modules with WAAS are readily available for the pi. Cheap too (on the order of $50). Have no idea how to get the gps information out of the pi and into foreflight.

I just realized that while I have all the pi hardware necessary, I don't have foreflight yet (was that a collective gasp I heard?) I know with the 1090 traffic information, you can see it with just a web browser (the appropriate options on dump1090). Can you do the same with the weather information?

I have this unit and it works really well even in my house, I get two towers on the device and never got any on the stratus!

It's dirt simple to build with the Dropbox link the original reddit or postted. Burn that to the SD card, and fire it up.

This is awesome!

The solution link is here:

https://www.reddit.com/r/flying/comment ... or_pretty/

So the first release of the ADS-B receiver software has been packaged up, eliminating most of the setup. If you want to make one:
Buy the items listed on Amazon in the original thread. I talked to the vendor selling the Pi kits, if we want to make a group buy we can save a bit on that - 10-20% depending on how many people we get together.
Download the pre-configured OS image here.
Write the image to the SD card using Win32DiskImager on Windows or Pi Filler on Mac OS X.
Put in the SD card and it should create a WiFi network "stratux" right away with no password. Connect to it with your iPad, open ForeFlight, and you should see "FreeFlight" in the devices section.

The Amazon shopping list is this:

http://amzn.com/B00MV6TAJI $70
http://amzn.com/B00P2UOU72 $26
http://amzn.com/B00JM59JPG $14

I like the KMASHI just on general principle.

Great CSOB ADS-B IN solution that pokes a finger in the eye of the Stratus/FF/Sporty's Monopoly.

Mike
