Hi everyone. Todd Mellema from Denver here and I'm new to Beech's and a clean '65 C33 Debonair caught my eye with 5300 ttaf and 1340 ttsfn on a IO470K and it appears to be compliant with all the ADs and a recent spar inspection and I am wondering what I might expect for future issues and what an annual (assuming no major issues) would set me back and what it would cost per hour to operate less fuel. Any comments on how that 225 hp would perform operating out Denver?
Thanks in advance for any input.
Todd

Todd,

The 225 hp deb will NOT perform as well at high Density Altitudes as the bigger engined debs. (260, 285, 300 Hp)

You can partially off set that by keeping your load light.

IF your mission payload will frequently be more than two adults, baggage, and full fuel... I'd probably consider a bigger engine.

Only two pluses for the little -K engine.
they are typically cheaper to purchase
they are able to burn unleaded mogas..

Leldon....
1700 plus hours in a 225 hp deb

Hey Todd,

I've been flying my G35 with it's E225-8 out of Longmont since 2000. It's certainly not the hot rod it is at sea level but it's totally workable. I've had mine to most of the mountain airports including Aspen and Leadville. As you know, we have the advantage of long runways on the front range.

Feel free to PM me if you want specifics.

not sure you can get a factory new io470k last time I knew they only had factory remans. Perhaps a long time ago you could.

Yes I would like to talk specifics. Since I am a virgin to Beech's (been driving Cessnas for 14 years) I am also looking for one to test drive with an experienced operator????
Dave
My mistake. The engine was installed in'92 and was a factory reman 0-time engine. My intent is once it runs out (or maybe sooner??) I intend to have western skyways install a 260hp IO470L but more likely a 280hp IO520. But this option requires a new prop ($$$). Thoughts?

Hey Todd,

No, not really. I think it's a great idea but I haven't considered it myself. I've heard good things about WS and they are close, if it were me I'd arrange a tour of their facility. Let me know if you want to go, maybe they could show us both around at the same time?

Deb annual should only be around $2000-2500 if you had a good pre-buy. Deb is a wonderful aircraft. I would recommend for a new Beech owner to attend a ABS service clinic. By the way-Welcome to Beech Talk!

Todd,

Depending on the prop installed on the -K... you MAY or MAY NOT need a different prop with a 260 or 285 hp engine upgrade.

The cost of operation... of a 225... 260... 285 hp debonair will all be almost exactly the same. (Purchase price higher generally with a bigger engine).

Believe it or not... the bigger engines will burn LESS fuel for a given trip than the 225 hp due to their higher compression and better BSFC.

Now... I'm not trash talking the 225 hp... I have owned one for >25 years.
But I have it mainly because I'm not very smart.....for nostalgic reasons and a hedge against high aviation fuel prices in the future.

My 285 hp straight tail is a more capable traveling machine.
