Welcome to BT Roger.

From a transplanted (Camden) Arkansan who ended up in the home of the Longhorns.

Waiting for the Sugar Bowl!

Today the nosewheel on my J folded on landing. I lowered the gear and no green. Left the pattern and noticed the breaker was popped. I put it back in and raised the gear and got red so I lowered it and got green this time. Breaker still in. The window on the floor showed down as well. Think about this and give me some input. Did I do right or wrong and what do you think happened. rog

Roger, sorry to hear about the nose gear.

I'm sure that I will be corrected if I am wrong, but I don't think that I would ever cycle the gear after it popping a breaker and not extending.

I would leave the breaker out, gear handle down, and start cranking.

Roger,

Sorry about the nose gear collapse. Let us know how much damage was done to your Bo? Some of us BT'ers may be able to help you find and obtain repair parts.

Roger,

That's a real shame, having the nose gear collapse. It will probably be expensive, but when you finish repairing it, you're be good to go.

If you had a prop strike, which is likely you will have to tear the engine down and inspect the crank. If you have a fairly high time engine, an overhaul with a fact reman might be in order to get a new crank and case. The 520 in a J is a rocket ship, as you have probably figured out.

If the breaker popped, there was something that caused enough binding to make that happen, and more than likely a rod end failure . . . maybe. May have been a bent rod.

Here's a schematic of it: (from Baron manual, but very similar)

There's also a shear pin that needs replacement that's between A and B that can wear.

Keep us posted, perhaps the group can make suggestions and help with parts, etc.

Thanks to all of you for the help. I agree that something was in a bind and threw the breaker. Today I went and got the nose gear down and locked. When i got the door out of the way it free fell down. That kind of tells me Maybe something mech. I am in the process of downloading a parts manual a fiend gave me and i think I can recognize whats bent and find part numbers. I have the tools and like sheetmetal work so we'll see. I suspect parts may be a bit difficult. I know I need both right and left cowl shells and a nose bowl. Both gear doors as well. Hardest part is the airplane is a hundred miles from home. Stay tuned rog

Hi Roger. Sorry to hear about your misfortune. I had a somewhat similiar story. Bought my Bonanza this summer and found a crack in the crankcase a month later. Almost finished with the overhaul now.

I'm an Arkansas native, but I live in Hernando, MS now. I'm on an airpark called Hernando Green Village (H75). It's about 15 mi south of Memphis. We're in the same neck of the woods. Maybe we can hook up sometime. I'd love to see your J - especially with the 520.

Good luck with your repairs and send me message if I can be of any assistance.

-Brian

POH states "After emergency gear extension, do not move any landing gear controls or reset any switches or circuit breakers until airplane is on jacks as failure may have been in the gear up circuit and gear might retract on ground."

Moien. I did not do an emergency extension. Your advice is good and the only thing touched since, has been to lift the aircraft and secure the nose wheel in a down position. I am listening to all advice given. thanks rog

I have to say I was spending time flyling and not in the POH. I suspect I will read more.
