In recent years, Lithuania has enjoyed massive invasion of LSAs (several dozens of new owners in 5 years are a lot to us), most people getting into recreational flying these days don't see the reason to buy certified aircraft anymore. Other very popular types of flying are gliding and flying hang-gliders (motorized or not), and, on nice summer weekends, this kind of aircraft dominate the skies.

That is some spontaneous info, any questions welcome.

Is there an equivalent to the US "Sport Pilot" certificate or to LSA pilots need the same level of training and testing as someone flying a 172?

Lance,

The equivalent of the U.S. Light Sport category is called ultralight here in Lithuania. I know that ultralight means something different in the U.S., but here it means roughly the same as the U.S. Light Sport category. For these planes, we have to get the so-called ultralight aircraft pilot's licence. A driver's health certificate is enough, you don't need an aviation medical and if you fail the aviation medical it does not affect your eligibility for the ultralight aircraft pilot's licence. Mandatory training time is 25 hours and costs appr. 6000$ (full PPL is 45 hours and costs ~13000$ in a 172). The ultralight aircraft pilot's licence is recognized in most, if not all, EU countries.
