Aircraft: PA28
Hello Everyone,

My name is Tony and I am from Maryland. I am looking to upgrade my plane to a more capable aircraft. I currently fly a Piper PA28 and am looking into possible upgrading to a Beech Travel Air, or a Sierra. (I do have about 20 hours in a Sierra when I was getting my IR few years back).

I am a 500 hour private with an instrument rating and low retract time (less than 50 hours) I do not hold a multi rating at this time. The reason for considering a multi is that I need or I should say would like to fly more often in weather conditions where I do not feel comfortable with a single; IMC night or east cost mountains. I have already checked with multiple insurance companies and both planes are not an issue.
I understand that twins require additional training and recurrent training which I do not find to be a problem. Most fights are with 3 people less than 400 miles and flying at 135 Knotts is not an issue to me.

I would like to solicit any and all comments regarding the two aircraft types, the +’s and –‘s of each type. I will be looking for an aircraft that is ready to use with a GPS and autopilot already installed, I am not looking to rebuild an aircraft again! I will probably end up with a B55 or B58 a few years from now.

Thanks,
Tony Haines

Tony, get a copy of Larry Ball's book, "From Travelair to Baron, how Beech Created a Classic". I think you can get a copy from the store at the American Bonanza Society.

This book will provide you with a list of annual model changes/improvements as well as performance specifications.

There is a strong argument for buying the plane you think you end up with eventually. I obviously concur with your thoughts on the twin since I own a 55 Baron myself and couldn't be happier with the plane. I'd argue that if you can afford a Travelair you should strongly consider a 55 series Baron as there are a number of great ones on the market right now for fire sale prices, and parts availability is not an issue but it might be more of one for the Travelair. Check peddlers talk for a few unbelievable deals. Hard to argue that there exists more capability per dollar than a Baron. The Travelair is a great plane however, very fun to fly and quiet and efficient twin... but the costs difference might not be as significant as you think... check out csobeech.com to see what a frugal guy can operate a 55 Baron for these days. I'm not quite as frugal as that, but was careful with the prebuy and seem to be doing pretty good *so far* ;)
