Paul, Yes, going from 180 hours in a Warrior to an A36 is a big jump.
But, it's entirely doable with patience, persistence, and caution.
I have 2 friends who learned to fly in a Cirrus SR22, getting their private and instrument tickets in that plane. Some called them crazy, but they persisted. It took some extra instruction hours (compared to doing it in a 172), and their insurance costs were pretty high the first couple years, but they got what they wanted and still love it.
Go for it...

I learned in a warrior and moved up to an A36 with 60 hrs. Did all of my instrument training in the A36. You'll be fine. Just respect the plane. Get good training and read everything here on BT. Read the past posts as there is a wealth of information and advice on moving up to a Bonanza with relatively few hours.

Paul,
You are doing the right thing by going to the BPPP training. Get a good Bonanza instructor for the transition training and you will be fine. I have an A36 at KPOC. If you want to fly over sometime we can go for a flight and I will let you know about my experiences owning 3 Bonanza’s.
If you want send me a PM with your phone number.

Took the best office staff in the world to the Bahamas, Disney World, Costa Rica, and Las Vegas. Found out that my 64 year old partner is marrying a 24 year old girl, is moving to Destin, will soon have to work full time again, and learned that you’re never too old to become dangerously stupid.
Finally started paying attention and discovered what a bunch of weenies we are compared to our parent’s generation, bought a Beech 18 with a fellow massochist, taking stewardess applications, got my A&P because you need it to own a Twin Beech, discovered Viagra, worked on Wings to Adventure television, survived prostate cancer, now have a TN-A36, teach the Advanced Pilot Seminars classes and am planning for me and Jiminy Cricket to live to be 103. Not sure how I happened across this post during an unrelated search but thought it might be as entertaining to others as it was to me.....bump.

I bought my first Beech Baron (N1164W) on Aug 2, 2008, and decided I need to build a bunch of time in it as quickly as I can. So far, I have 38 hours this month in the Baron, and have traveled from Indy to Atlanta, GA, Charlotte, NC, Pittsburgh, PA and St Cloud, Minnesota. I wish I had bought a Baron sooner ! I will be looking for advice on how to quickly deplete my savings account while improving my mistress (that is what my wife calls my planes). I started flying in December of 2004, and got my private in March 2005 and Instrument Rating in January of 2006. My first plane was a Cessna 182 that I flew about 335 hours. Then I moved on to a Piper Lance, have 114 hours and one dead stick landing on I-70 in February this year, which I still have but have not flown ever since I bought the Baron. I will post pictures as soon as I have them. I have just recently mailed in the paperwork to the FAA to get it registered, I was having so much fun flying it that I forgot to do the paperwork ! I am a Civil Engineer by training, but being an undiagnosed ADD, I have been doing anything and everything under the sun. Currently, I am affiliated with the Nuclear industry. Have three kids, oldest is out of the house but he is not out of my pocket book, second one, she is a Junior in College and the youngest is 12 and is the best instrument pilot in the family as he is too short to look above the glareshield, so he is forced to fly instruments – which he does exceedingly well. Great looking site, I hope to participate more frequently..... ...Babar. Stuart, now you've gone and done did it. Your trip down memory lane got me interested. I found Babar's 1st post. Sure do miss that guy.

What a trip back in time ! Interesting to see how peoples perspectives have changed since. Some of the folks who posted in 2007/2008 have since: - retired and changed their flying - progressed to a different kind of flying - passed away - moved through all the hardware up to turboprop or jet - built entire businesses in aviation - owned about 20 planes since (with each of them being the only real option )

Dean, I don't know if you are an ABS member but Bill Compton wrote an article in the July issue about his conversations with Babar regarding the preparations for the trip and especially his e-mails on and just before his final departure from Pago Pago. Don't know if someone has already posted this in another thread on BT.

Thanks Bill.
Yes, someone did post it. Pretty hard to read, from an emotional standpoint. But seemed to be a well reasoned and written piece.

I happened upon this thread during an unrelated search. This is awesome reading material. The introductions here are a great sampling of the vast gulf of our differing backgrounds. At the same time, and for the same reasons, these post lend to an historical significance of our similarities. I've spent a couple weeks reading this thread, to 'catch up' on the early days of BeechTalk, and I have to offer very sincere thanks to all who made this happen, including all of the early members......BT Pioneers!
I have never properly introduced myself. I will in the coming weeks. Until then I want everyone here to know that BT has given me more than technical info, advice, opinion and etc........this has been a place I come to for these, but I also come here to glean ideas, education, and last but not least...........entertainment! I also try to contribute when I feel there is something I can offer for benefit of this community. There are so many folks here with a full lifetime x2 of experiences and story's. I enjoy every one of them. Again, thanks to the Jeff's and all of you who've shared a bit, or a lot, of your life. This is good medicine; the highs and the lows make it real.
