hello all, i have possibly found a purchase locally. deb with io470n, a little over 1400 hours with s tec and original gauges and interior, all needing replaced which i intend, as well as paint eventually. looking to put dual g5's and 430 and new radio's. ive been out of flying for over 16 years and am now back in along with my 17 year old son, who wants to pursue as a career. asking price is around 80k. advantage as i see it is i can stagger upgrades over a few years but wondering if i would save much by just buying a 130-140k deb with all of this done to begin with. I do not relish the thought of so many trips to paint, maintenance and avionics shops. Im figuring 15k in avionics, 20k+paint and 20k interior along with 40k overhaul. am i being reasonable in these assumptions?

You won’t get avionics for just $15k. Realistically, I’d plan $25-30k minimum.
Plan $30k for paint.
Plan $50-60k for overhaul. You’ll have to remove & reinstall it, replace hoses, likely do the prop, etc.

If you buy it for $80k, I’d figure you’ll have at least $180k in it, all said and done.

At 1400 hours you're near TBO (doesn't mean it will need it but you might so be aware)

Avionics will run more than 15k. Probably 15k or more just for the labor unfortunately plus all the "we found this" that goes along with upgrading a panel.

Paint price is close, interior is high IMO depending on how fancy you want to go. It can be done for 5-10 easily.
Overhaul is closer to 60 probably at the moment unfortunately.

It's almost never cheaper to buy one that needs everything upgraded unless it's a smoking deal, which this isn't.

To answer your question yes you'd be better off buying one that's already had all that work done unless you like a project and just really want to customize it.

And who cares about local? It's a plane, find the best example within your budget and fly it home.

I did (am doing) the "buy low and upgrade over time" path. It is the best fit for my budget and I enjoy the process (more or less... most of the time... usually).

If that does not appeal to you, keep shopping.

i think that would be more appealing if the price was more attractive or it wasnt in need of overhaul (potentially). thank you all for the replies btw

If you can find a nice Deb with everything done already I'd do that. Your estimate for avionics covers about 50% of what you would like to do. Then take it to a good beechcraft shop and have them take care of the mechanical issues and you will have a soild plane with the least amount of downtime.
