I would call BPPP recommended shops (like Beaver Air Services at DWH) and tell them you are looking for an off-market 58 for sale. I called about thirteen shops in the US, and found one that way.

Wife and I fly a '96 with steam gauges (but an older Sandel HSI) with a 530/430 and a GMX-200. KFC-200 works, and the plane has radar/boots/oxygen.

Chris, that's an outstanding tip! Never thought of that - and that could expand the possibilities. For the one you found... was it off market about to go on and the shop knew that, or how did that all play out.. just curious.

Also, is there any integration between the radar and the 430/530? Still learning about how Wx radar integrates into some of the avionics boxes, and when that started to be "a thing". Also, any advice on long range tanks or not? Do you have the 166G or 196G on your bird? Thanks!

VR,
Chad

Chad, mine was off market and about to go on market. Shop had been maintaining the plane for four years and knew the plane well enough to deem a prebuy not necessary. I have a theory that the best planes (and classic cars fwiw) never hit the open market. I have the 166g, so the tradeoff is less range but not having to repair the wet wing 196g tips, which are known to leak. Rarely would i have a mission that the payload would allow all 196g. The Bendix King radar displays on my GMX200, XM/ADSB on the 530/430.

There's no way to display onboard radar on a GNS430/530 but you can on a GTN750 as well as on a G500Txi. But be aware that unless it's a Garmin radar (e.g. GWX68/70/75) you have to pay a $4000-5000 "unlock fee" for each unit that displays the radar.

Also, AFaIK only "digital" radars (e.g RDR2000, RDR61/62) work with the Garmin stuff.

Some other info about the B58: The earliest versions came with 285HP IO520 engines, after that the engines were 300HP IO550s. There is an STC to upgrade the older ones to 550s.

You should definitely pick up a copy of Larry Ball's Travel Air / Baron book. It contains a fairly accurate listing of the improvements made for each model year.

Thanks Tom, appreciate the tip on the E55. I will say that the barn doors were also a big attraction for family in getting in and out (and my wife is likely going to opt for sitting in the back mostly - so getting in and out has to be easy - or else I might be non-hangered, lol). But I chuckled on the twister comment. Would be interested to hear in others experience in hauling passengers on some longer trips in the barn-door/crew seating configuration - comfortable or no?

It was no problem for four average-size teenage girls to be comfortable on 6-hour trips. They never complained - but they did like each other. Barn doors made for very easy load/unload. When we did Pilots 'n Paws getting crates aboard was easier than over the wing.

Great idea to look for off-market aircraft. Ours was too - well, on market but not advertised.
