My dad and I are looking at getting a bonanza in the next 1-2 years. Currently a ppl and should have my ifr in April so long I pass. Looking to continue all the way to commercial and multi. I plan on making this my career. I have a bit over 100TT. I’m just here to gather information. I recently flew my schools ArrowIII and it really opened my eyes to how easy a 172 is to fly… it changed my opinion a lot. I plan on doing all my commercial part 141 in the ArrowIII to get a decent amount of complex. I know bonanzas are a whole other animal compared to Arrows but the Arrow is the closest thing I have for only 160 an hour. The reason I’m looking at bonanzas is for a great xc and time builder aircraft. I’m not so sure the CFI route is how I’d like to venture building time. We could go out and buy a plane under 100K but it would not make my training any cheaper. This is the route I believe we want to pursue but it wouldn’t be the first time we changed our minds.

Welcome and good luck on your journey. The Bonanza is an incredible aircraft and with the proper training a great platform to continue your plans.

It definitely seems like a great all around plane for what we are looking to do with it. Plenty of speed and enough useful load to make some sweet memories in.

Definitely enjoying the training… can’t say the same for the studying. Have to know the information though to back up the flying!

Hey Grant,

I did my instrument training in an Arrow in order to build retract time for buying a Bonanza, which I took delivery of a few weeks ago! Honestly, the Arrow is harder to land than a Bonanza. I think it's a good plane to prepare in. The Bonanza is of course a lot faster, so the biggest challenge for me was really slowing down for procedures and in the traffic pattern - gear out early, slow to 110 in downwind (or even 90 if you're sharing with 172's), until you get used to things. You can easily find yourself entering the traffic pattern or starting the procedure turn at 160 ktas (or a lot faster if you're descending into it) and get really behind if you do not anticipate.

That is the biggest difference from what everyone else says and what I’ve read. I think having that complex backing of the arrow with my commercial with help me feel a lot more prepared for the performance of a bonanza. Either way these are all just numbers and I find it’s very hard to put them in perspective until your left seat in a plane. Definitely need to get a bonanza mentor on here eventually.
