Long time stalker first time poster!
Started with Adam Fische and his adventures with his twin commander and wanted to join the game. So I purchased my first plane a Twin Commander 500s Great Plane! Liked it so much I sold it and purchased a Piper Aerostar 601p. Have flown this plane for 400+ Hours.
Amazing aircraft both of them, now im itching to go into the turboprop realm... Is this a disease or something? Been Reading the posts about the Piaggio and the MU2.... Just trying to wrap my head around the Jump in costs and maintenance. Although I hear that the Turbines are much more manageable on a day to day basis than the piston twins.
Thanks for reading!

Jeffry, I think you need to ask yourself: Do I enjoy flying or do I enjoy going places in an airplane? IF you enjoy flying, the planes you are considered are not going to be as much fun to fly as what you currently have. Of course, if you are all about going places (faster) then you are headed in the right direction. Me, I’d rather spend 3 hours in an Aerostar than two in something faster that handles like a truck. If you are following Adam, I think your only option is a Commander 690A/B. Operating costs for an MU-2 can be close to the same as what you're paying to run your Aerostar when averaged out over several years. The Commanders will be slightly more than the MU-2. Anything with PT-6s will be more than that. All of the turbines will spend less time in the shop than your 601P. The Commanders are fun to fly, but they're really not THAT much faster than your 601P. The cabins are much larger. What's your goal? Is it just an itch or is there something the Aerostar doesn't do well for you? Edit - the 690A/B Commanders are similar in speeds to the 601P. Any 690 with a -10 will run away from a 601P. I was assuming the starting budget was modest.

Jeff - when it comes to Commanders, do exactly the opposite of what I did! Slumming it in the turbine world doesn't really work. Buy a nice bird that doesn't need tons of work and you'll be very happy. Don't buy a flying restoration object like I did. Great aircraft, all models of them. But if I had a choice, I'd go for a longwing model with the -10's.

A Commander with this setup would look cool, too! If I could pry this out of Jim Cristys Hanger I would in a heartbeat! But I hear Its always in a fuel emergency or something

Forrest Forrest, You have a wonderful way of putting things back into perspective. Im going through this exercise and questioning my motives along the way. I do love to fly, but sometimes I just need to be at my destination faster that I can fly with the Aerostar. That being said, this is really just scheduling more than anything else. Plus are MU-2s or 690a/b really better flying machines than an Aerostar? I do like the speed, and less MX on a turbine. I think.... Also its usually just me and my gear, so a big Turbo Commander seems like total overkill. The MU-2 is smaller... Sportier... But if it flys like a truck, would I be disappointed? The dilemmas

Jim, Thanks for the reply I like less maintenance with the turbines I like the speed - especially the MU-2 And being able to operate an MU-2 for close to the same price as my Aerostar is enticing for sure. Not so sure about the yearly Training and possibly the insurance costs of the turbines. Plus being a turbine pilot/Owner is another notch on the belt Id like to fulfill.

Yes, yes! But I agree with Forrest - nothing flies as crisp and good as an Aerostar. Both MU-2's and TC's are trucks compared.

Dang! A Commander Jetprop is about as responsive, honest, conventional, and generally awesome handling airplane as I’ve flown. It always does more than you ask. I flew the the Aerostar for 5.5 hours today. I love it, but I’d by lying if I said I wasn’t wishing I was in a 690 or later airplane. The 690 is more stable and the performance is in another league. I had to bounce around at 4000’ in light to moderate to get 180 knots over the ground. Comparing a Mits to a Commander in handling? Now you’re really talking crazy
