Hi all,
My intro subject line is misleading. I work with an well established aviation design firm. A number of years back we did some work to resurrect the Riley 421C STC with some upgrades, and in the process did quite a bit of research. While doing some house cleaning I found a stash of drawings for the project, mostly copies. I haven't gone through it all to see exactly what I have, but I'm sure it has some interest to someone out there, I'd like to find it a good home.
I will go through it and try and put together a list of what it all is, but till then I'm just judging interest.
It's not for sale, and it's research we did, so I believe it is safe to hand off to someone else to care for it.
Hopefully there is some interest.
Bruce

Hi bruce and welcome to BT. Hope you find the best home for the documents you are holding.

That resurrection attempt failed because there was “no demand” for the reincarnation of the Riley 421C.

The tail was never designed for that much horsepower and when Cessna created the Conquest one they redesigned the horizontal stabilizer to accept the extra horsepower.

The original 421C tail was a weak point in the design of the Riley 421C. IMHO your documents DO NOT HAVE VALUE AND ARE NOT WORTH SAVING.

Are you from Paso Robles CA.?

Riley Turbine Rocket 421
Conversion of Cessna 421 aircraft by fitting two Lycoming LTP101 turboprop engines. Formal designation R421BL and R421CL for conversions of 421B and C respectively.[4]
Riley Turbine Eagle 421
Conversion of Cessna 421C aircraft by fitting two 750hp Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-135 turboprop engines. Formal designation R421CP.[4]
Excalibur 421
Re-engined 421C with Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-135A or PT6A-112 turboprops, supplemental type certificate held by Excalibur 421 LLC of Paso Robles, California.[6] In 2013 it was announced that Aviation Alliance are acting as program managers for the Excalibur 421 updagrade programme.[7]

Another great aviation idea designed to make a small fortune out of a large one! $2.5 mill for a 421 with a Pratt conversion, isn't that what a Conquest I is for half or less price?? :dunno: I'd love to see how they get 327 knots out of it!

"The remanufactured Cessna 421C will feature Pratt & Whitney PT6A-135A turboprop engines, Garmin G600 avionics, winglets, new tires and brakes, and new cabin, de-icing, hydraulic and electrical systems. Including airframe, the aircraft will retail for $2.5 million, complete with a new-aircraft warranty. Preliminary specifications include a 327-knot top speed and 1,420-nm range. A prototype Excalibur 421 is now flying, and FAA STC approval and deliveries are expected by year-end. In addition, a similar program is in the works for the Cessna 414."

I wasn’t trying to be humble, just factual. That project has been DROPPED by a lot of very smart and knowledgeable people. Jack Pelton of the EAA is one of those people.

It still might have historical interest for someone.

Lance I agree there could be some historical interest.

Remember the twin V tail Bonanza? Or the Twin Navion?

Jerry,
Bruce is not trying to sell these papers or trying to build a Riley 421C, but rather is suggesting that this research may be of sentimental - if not historic - value to someone. That seems reasonable to me.

Bruce,
You may find more interest (and a kinder reception) on The Twin Cessna Flyer forum. Bob Thomason runs that operation; you might check with him to see if he knows of someone who might be interested.... editor@twincessna.org

Thank folks for the welcome, and especially Arlen. I'm not here to validate the net worth of the conversion, or trying to make a buck. When researching this originally I met a few owners who were very passionate about them. Those are the people who might want to keep this for historical archives.
Interesting that when I tried to find a forum for the Cessna 421 I found this one first.
Thank you.
Bruce

Bruce, I apologize if I seemed harsh. The Excalibur is a plane that should never be built.
With the original Cessna 421 tail it would be dangerous.

I wish you well.

no worries. I wasn't trying to validate the design. I know when I was researching the program I met some very passionate owners. I think they might want this for their archives, it is data outside of what the customer paid for and received, and I just want it to go to a good home.
Thanks.
Bruce

Mission accomplished, the documents will be preserved for whomever needs them. Thank you all for your help. Moderator, you can delete this thread or just let it die. Thanks all.

Hi Bruce, I'd be interested in the documents, or scans if you still have them. I have a friend who owns a 421C with the Riley Turbine conversion, and I'm helping him understand more about the airplane by building him a training program. I'm also interested to learn as much as I can. DM me if you've still got them.
Thanks,
Chris

That was super nice to offer them versus tossing them in the blue bin. I love old technical documents like that and still have teams of this patent copies sitting downstairs from work I did decades ago. Granted, the original engineering docs and IP is with the owners. This was just the copies of the approved patents and the acrylic block with the teeny copy of the patent.

Hopefully someone can preserve those for the good of aviation!

Thank you for starting that process

Bob sold out to another entity on Jan 1, 2022. I think this guy already was on that forum trying to give these away.
