Hello,

I am a VFR pilot looking to buy something to get my IFR and fly the family around. I have a potential co-owner and we are looking for something that seats 4, at least 800 lbs useful load, ADSB-out, GPS w/ WAAS, and under $60K (I know, that is still a lot of planes!). We are starting to think that we might be able to get into a Bonanza but I know there are all kinds of things to look out for when getting into some of the older ones. Hence, I am here!

Welcome Jimmy, a treasure trove of data and wisdom on this site. Search for “which plane” etc and you’ll find lots of threads on this topic that will keep you reading for quite a while.

Hopefully you’re aware “seats 4” and “can carry 4” are very different characteristics. At 800 useful, 4 modern adults leaves barely enough fuel for IFR reserves.

I think having the plane you plan to fly IFR in for your training is a good strategy. Having a partner helps with the fixed expenses and if you analyze it you’ll see the capital cost is often not the big driver, hence, you might look at stretching that budget to over $100k, you’ll get better equipped, more capable and better maintained planes to choose from with relatively little impact on your total cost of ownership.

Hi Jimmy and welcome to BT.

Yes, you might have to start looking at something with six seats. If you do some weight and balance calculations you will see what is left over for fuel. Flight plan that and see if it meets your needs. Your 800 pound useful load requirement....did you mean that to be with full fuel?

Thanks, I am already finding a lot while exploring on here.

And yes, I am aware. My family is skinny (for now) with all four of us weighing in at 410lbs ramp weight. I know that will change as the kids grow, but these are first plane goals.

If your goal is to take the family traveling cross country, and that's one of the best things there is about having your own airplane, then I'd follow the CrashTalk threads. You'll need a strong stomach to read some of them, but you'll learn (and likely contribute) a lot of really valuable stuff. Not just stuff about what not to do, but what to do instead.
