Aircraft: Cessna 195
Hi!
Thanks for allowing me on. I currently fly a Cessna 195 and am looking for a light twin as my family is outgrowing the 195. We do travel in the 195 and plan to increase that as time goes on. I was hoping a 55 would fit the bill for me on usefulness and budget.

Beautiful bird Rob. Welcome to BT. I can’t be much help about a B55, but you have come to the right place.

55 Model Baron's can give you a lot of useful load, room and performance for the dollar! Be aware that seats 5 & 6 are loaded through the large baggage door. Great for kids, most adults would think it's awkward. Many 55 Barons only have 4 or 5 seats installed.

Mike's site at Csobeech.com is a great site to learn about the planes and how to run and maintain them on a regular (as opposed to unlimited) budget. With GAMIJectors (tuned fuel injectors) you can get a very reasonable MPG, something like 11 GPH per side at 170 knots. (If you want 190 knots, turn up the fuel flow...)

Cessna 310's are also a light twin that is affordable in the market and might fit your needs. Worth a look. They have more elbow room due to a wider cabin.

Normally aspirated light twins can have impaired engine-out performance at high density altitude airports. Something to consider if you're based out of Wyoming. There are turbo light twins, but the 55 Baron is not one of them. There are 58TC and a 56TC models from Beech, as well as turbo 310's and lots of turbo Senecas from Piper. There are upgraded 300hp Beech 55's that will have better performance at high density alt.

Good luck in your search!
