Hello Beechtalkers –
It struck me as I was typing this message just how fortunate I am to be a new Bonanza owner. O r maybe “new owner of an old-but-younger-than-me Bonanza” is a more accurate way to say it ...
In any event, I’m very pleased to join the ranks of all you experienced Beechcraft caretakers. My airplane is a 1972 V35B, currently housed at KDVT on the north side of the Phoenix metro area.
Like many of you, I went though a long process that started with me thinking I could find the “right” airplane on my own, but quickly realizing that the truly good ones sold in about 5 minutes or just changed hands without ever coming onto the market at all. I recognized that I needed help, not just in finding an airplane but in objectively evaluating its strengths and weaknesses and in making a realistic price/value assessment.
So after some research, I connected with Randy Africano and that was a game changer. I can say without hesitation that Randy added real value at every step of the process. From our very first conversation, he had me thinking about aspects of the purchase and the process that I hadn’t considered before. Randy obviously knows a LOT about Bonanzas, but he also knows a LOT about the general aviation market at large and the many factors (some obvious, some not so much) that impact the value of our airplanes. And there’s no doubt that his reputation in the Bonanza world gives him access to off-market aircraft that his clients otherwise would never even be aware of. I’m very glad I had Randy working with me throughout this process, and I recommend him without reservation.
I am currently working through “the list” that all new aircraft owners seem to compile. Nothing significant from an airworthiness standpoint (we were able to have the pre-buy converted to an annual inspection, thanks again to Randy’s help) but there are definitely a few items that I want to get done right away, with installing shoulder harnesses at the top of that list. But for the most part, they’re relatively minor or cosmetic: maybe new carpet? replace the gummy cabin door seal? a little paint touching-up here and there? It’s quickly become obvious to me that Bonanza stewardship is less of an event and more of an ongoing process – and that it’s addictive, expensive, and very gratifying all at the same time.
One funny thing happened in the middle of this process. The day after we signed the purchase contract, I was having a “What the hell did I just get myself into?” moment when an email popped up from the American Bonanza Society about renewing my membership. When I opened the email, guess what airplane was in the picture at the top of the message? I took it as a sign from above that I was on the right track …
My best, Joe

Congrats Joe!
I’m also a new V35 caretaker based in DVT (since Jan). Hope to see you around up there.
Cheers, Jeff
