Hi Andy -
Welcome to the J-Bird club.
As others have mentioned, DO ensure that you fully understand your fuel system and how it works.
THEN, develop a routine for fuel burn and follow it to the letter.
You MUST burn from your left tank first (w/ fuel fuel).
And before burning from the AUX tank you MUST burn at least 10 from your left main.
When on the AUX tanks, the unburned fuel returns to the left tank.
There are a variety of techniques that folks use on these airplanes to manage fuel flow/burn, but I am loathe to suggest one for you.
Just truly internalize knowledge of your fuel system and understand where the fuel is going and why.
While properly managed, the fuel systems on the J, K, & Ms are fine, but they will bite the unwary.

Correct on mains returning to themselves for our J as well. We run .5 on the left main, drain the auxs, assure flow from the right main for about 5 min, drain the left main. At that point we know there are 17 usable remaining in the right main. Look at fuel flow, establish the reserve for your operations (IFR vs. VFR vs. personal mins) and pick a place to land.
You will most likely find when you use all the fuel in the aux and left main you probably actually have 2-3 more gallons in those tanks that what is "usable" and can be used for planning.
