Howdy everyone! Got my ticket back in December and been building time on my club's 172/150 while starting the "hunt" for our own.

I've been a fan of the Bo since before I got my license... so it's a major contender for me.

I fly out of a small country airport, but the bigger consideration is the lack of hanger space available (in the US Mid Atlantic for reference) -- I'm kinda split between something like a 182 or a 33/35.

Major goals are to begin pursuing my IR after I get to 150ish hours and feel steady in VFR, and then onward towards my CFI / CFI-I I think. I enjoy sharing the fun of aviation and really enjoyed part 61 training.

Normal mission is pretty straight forward, myself, wife and single kiddo for local fun trips, sight seeing, and some XC to visit family / friends. Occasionally may take some buddies on random jaunts.

I've been lurking in the forum since January just trying to soak in a bit of the wealth of info you all have here, and I wanted to say thanks in advance because I've learned a lot even just by skimming through posts here as a PPL.

Have a good Memorial Day!

I bought my last airplane first. A 65 Debonair.

I was lucky. Never looked back.

A mid '50s-'60s Bo can often be cheaper to buy than a good C182. (emphasis on *good*), but will likely be more expensive to insure for a low-time pilot and maintain (annual) . The Bo will be faster of course.

The main reservation I have about low time pilots getting into Bonanzas, (or ANY other complex SEP) is, unless they have a mentor, it's easy to buy a money pit. By all means, get a Bonanza if you want, but get some Beech experienced help shopping and for the pre-buy inspection. You'll want detailed logbooks on the aircraft.

C182s are much simpler birds, most mechanics have experience with them, know where to source parts etc. Still needs a thorough pre-buy and inspection of the logs, but the list of potential "gotchas" is shorter IMHO.

I paid $6000 for my Bo's first annual. The second was much cheaper after the maint catchups, and it was already in nice shape, and low time when I bought it.

I definitely plan on:
  • Being patient
  • Getting help from a local/regional mentor (and/or someone like Neal)
  • Continuing to build time on the 150/172 rather than rush into a complex
  • Gather advice and thoughts and ideas from here, my airport, and other places online, etc...

Once I get to 100 hours (about 20 more from now) I'll start looking around the MD/PA area for a complex I can rent w/ CFI if possible to get a bit under my belt as well.

If the right Bo/182 comes along before then, I won't be shy but I really don't want to rush into anything until I learn and understand more about airplane ownership!

Despite the near term lack of a hangar option, I do plan to get into owner maintenance (within the FAA rules) so I can really get to know whichever bird I end up with :)

Thanks for the thoughts, I really do look forward to learning more as I keep reading -- you all have a wealth of experience!

Jason, one other thing, determine what equipment you'll want in your airplane, and then try like heck to find one with all that already installed. (autopilot, GPS, ADSB, etc.) It will be much cheaper than adding later piece by piece, you'll just have to adjust your budget/expectations accordingly.

I have a very good friend, fellow controller, who I soloed way back when (along with his wife). Years later, he was working at another facility, making decent money, and he bought a mid-60s Bonanza. He told me his first three annuals cost over $10,000 each, (replacing bladder tanks and major gear O/H among other items) and he also suffered a complete engine failure resulting in a deadstick landing. Last time I spoke to him, he'd sold the Bo and quit flying. Stuff like that can take all the fun out. Don't want that to happen to you.

I definitely don't want to have that kind of ownership experience!

I've heard from a lot of folks that it's best to buy an airplane equipped like you want (especially avionics)... I know it's early yet, but I am quasi-curious to see if (and how soon) something like the Dynon stuff makes it's way past the 172 line and starts to revive even more airframes with fresh avionics on a lower budget.

But I'm not holding my breath!

Thanks for the sage advice though, I will definitely keep it in mind.

I lucked up on a partnership that has been fantastic. The plane was already hangared, flying weekly and up on maintenance. I slid in to a quarter share and get to fly it pretty much anytime during the week I want.

There is a 4 person partnership in an Arrow at Tipton that had a partner leave and were looking to fill that slot. That was a month or so ago. Don't know if it has been filled but you could stop into the FBO and inquire.
