New to BeechTalk as well and trying to learn how to navigate the forums. Retired airline Captain. I’ve decided I need my first airplane. I’m awaiting delivery (6+weeks) of a 1988 F33A. It will be getting new paint, Signature OH IO-550, OH prop, Garmin GTX345. With the Garmin 430W and Avidyne Flightmax EX 500 MFD, I hope to have what I need for my ADS-B out/in needs.
I have a total of about 65 hrs in Cessna single engine aircraft, most of that getting my private 45 years ago. 20 years AF Res (C-130 and A-10) and 37 years airline. I’m located in east central Tennessee. Looking for a CFI in my area to assist in getting me up to speed and getting aircraft moved around as needed. Will either need to find A/P for Pre-purchase in east Arkansas area south of Memphis or bring plane to A/P near where I am. At this point, planning the latter and having a CFI do the flight test while I fly. Conduct pre buy, re-negotiate what’s found and close.
Planning AOPA for insurance and their requirements for required dual.
Have spent 3 months learning and getting to this point. The more I learn, the less I know.
All advice welcome. Thanks

Welcome to beechtalk. You will be badgered soon for pics of your new plane. Necessary things for you to do are join the American bonanza society. You also may want to consider falcon insurance, a long time sponsor of the ABS.

Ken,

Thank you for your service, and congratulations on an honorable career. I recommend that you join the American Bonanza Society. Best money you’ll ever spend! Then contact Steve Hammers. He is a BPPP instructor in Tennessee. He will do a great job of getting you up to speed on your new “magic carpet”. Or contact Jeff Carneal...one of the creators of BeechTalk. He is also an outstanding instructor, located in Nashville.

Good luck...and welcome!!!

Welcome to BT.

Many folks do better than AOPA for insurance. Talk with some of the insurance brokers who are BT members that you find on the right hand advertising banner -------------------->

Were in East Central TN? Knoxville area? East is home for me (Tri Cities area) until recently as the Boss decided we needed to live near water.

The where in East TN for CFI's potentially can be a little tougher than most anywhere I have lived. Anything further East of Knoxville and there aren't really any flight schools of substance. KMOR has a nice little operation and I have heard good thinks about the school at DKX, but that's about it. I don't mean to imply there aren't CFI's, just that there aren't many flight schools in the area. So here's a good place to look.

I'm a big believer in AOPA (as an organization), but you can do better with the insurance than using AOPA's agency. And my definition of "better" is price, coverage, and writing company.

Welcome! Wow an F33A with an io550 is my DREAM machine. Thats going to be a lot of fun. So you haven't flown small GA since getting your ratings? It will be interesting to hear how easy the transition is from big behemoths of the air to these smaller pistons again.

Hi Ken,

Welcome to the world of light GA airplanes!

Given your location, you may want to join the crowd this Saturday at the BeechTalk fly-in in Knoxville (DKX):
viewtopic.php?f=35&t=143995

A chance to meet many of us in person, and maybe to talk to some nearby instructors, too.

Best regards,
Martin

Again, enjoying the reply’s. I’m in Cookeville TN. Plan to hanger at KSRB, Upper Cumberland Regional. Vincent, joined ABS this morning. Will do online training and consider BPPP depending on what my insurance requires (company TBD). Will check with those CFIs
Insurance ABS recommends Falcon Insurance. Everyone I know seems to use a different broker???
Martin. Great opportunity, but have to take wife to different airport BNA to DEN.
Best to all
Ken

Ah, you're more Central TN than I thought. You should have loads of Bo CFI's out your way.

As for insurance, I like Falcon also. And Airpower. And have heard good things about Wings. I'm just not a fan of AOPA, but that's just a preference.

All the brokers largely use the same writing companies (the true insurance company) as there aren't a ton of insurance companies that write GA. Some brokers work harder on your behalf with the writing companies on requirements and coverages than others. That's when the right broker is worth his/her weight in gold. Well, maybe not gold.. but you know what I mean.

You really can't shop the brokers once you provide them a specific N number as that broker will then block you with the writing companies from shopping. (I assume they still do that). Many get around that by specifying a make / model / year / value and such without a N number. Therefore you can see how Falcon vs. Air Power work, if you chose to do so. You're not going to have any issues getting insurance. However some of the stipulations might be different and that's where a good broker can help.

Hopefully the time will pass quickly and you'll be flying your F33 before you know it.

Welcome Ken! Congrats!
That is a SOLID upgrade list you posted there  You are a whopping 20 gal of avgas away ( yeah- you probably need to stop thinking in lbs of fuel but if you must 200 lbs of gas will get you to Clemson with descent reserve :D ). I’m probably a bit far away but would be happy to help if needed.
My last active duty assignment was at Eglin AFB 18 years ago. Feels Like a lifetime.
Please feel free to PM me if needed.

Scott
