Depending on your experience in the search process, you might consider contacting someone to assist. One of the best is here on BT - Neal Schwartz. memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=640Good luck & Welcome to BT!

Good job on your prebuy. I know everyone says the "S" is the one to have, but keep in mind the V will have a very comparable empty weight but higher max gross. They are identical otherwise. To me, a light V is the one to have. That was the conclusion of my research, and shopping.

To me, a light V is the one to have. That was the conclusion of my research, and shopping. I agree. However, I have seen some S's, even with the lower gross, still have more useful load than some V's. There is so much variation over the years with equipment, interior, paint etc. that each airplane has to be looked at individually. Same goes for CG. I recently downloaded WNB Pro which lets me input the specific empty weight and arm for any individual airplane I am looking at so I can play around with loading scenarios. I have learned that for most of my flying, CG will be more critical than useful load. I am including S's in the search since they are the first to have the larger baggage area and IO-520. Is there anything else I should consider?

Jordan, Both models are excellent - no need to drift from that search. Let’s talk about CG. They all came off the assembly line with pretty much the same CG. When you see big swings in CG on the planes you are looking at, it’s because of “stuff” that has been added since leaving the factory OR somebody messed up weighing the plane. The latter happens often. The “stuff” that makes a big difference is a 3 blade prop which is good for CG in a 35, or radio/autopilot equipment behind the baggage compartment bulkhead. I have an S with a 3 blade Hartzell in front, and only the 406 ELT and S-tec autopilot elevator servo in the back. My CG is good at 78.4 with just the four passenger seats installed. I almost never have a CG problem. My empty weight is 2,131 lbs and because I have 15 gallons BDS tip tanks my max weight is 3,550 which results in a useful load of 1,418 lbs. If you find a plane you really like with a nasty aft CG, take a look at what’s behind that baggage compartment bulkhead. If there are lots of old avionics boxes you can fix the CG by upgrading to the new panel mounted electronics available and removing the heavy “stuff” in back that is causing the aft CG. If you are looking at a plane with a lousy CG and there isn’t any stuff in back, and the nose ballast weight hasn’t been removed, then the CG computations have been screwed up. Re-weigh and be more careful with the measuring, particularly finding the verticle axis of the MLG axels..
