Aircraft: Musketeer A23
Hi,
I am seriously considering buying a Musketeer.

I did get a few hours in a Musketeer in the 80's and I remember it as being a comfortable and very stable aircraft to fly.

Up until a year ago I was flying my Ercoupe from my 2,000 foot grass strip (long hayfield). Does this sound adequate for the Musketeer? I think I saw specs for the Musketeer at approx 1300ft for a 50 foot obstacle landing and takeoff. The Ercoupe is listed at about 1100 and I usually had it stopped easily before midfield. Should I expect the Musketeer to be dramatically different (or scary on a 2,000 ft grass strip).

I am hoping to get some advice on what to pay special attention to in a 1964 Musketeer (prepurchase). I do understand that the crank and the camshaft on the 346 are very hard find if they need to be replaced. I talked to John earlier today and he did mention that landing gear rebuilds can be expensive on the Musketeer. When I purchased my Ercoupe there was a prepurchase inspection list that the Coupers had developed. I am hoping to find something similar for the Musketeer.
Any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Norm

Welcome to BeechTalk Norm!

Although I cannot speak for the numbers on the Mustateer, I can say that the two I have flown have both had very impressive takeoff performance out of my local 2500 foot airport. I am sure someone else will chime in with more info, but I can't think of a better airplane for the money than a Muskateer!

I only have a few hours in a 23, but it was enough to give me a good idea about the airplane.

The best description is that it's a "cabin class Cherokee." It's big, comfortable, and built like a tank. They are a bit slow. The one I flew was based on a 2200' grass runway, 2700' the other direction. 2200' was not a good choice unless you were light. Once, I had three people and half tanks, warm day and the 2700' well mowed runway made me very nervous. Landing on anything over 1500' is no problem.

Problems areas are the (brass?) bushing for the nose landing gear that get worn with steering. I believe they are made of unobtanium. MLG strut pucks are expensive to change from what I remember. The wing is a bonded wing, and difficult or expensive to fix. Seems like fuel drains were expensive and odd.

I never joined, but from what I understand, there is tons of information here:

Overall, they are a great airplane that's an absolute joy to fly. It flies exactly like a fixed gear Bonanza...

I still have a hand full of parts left from the one that I flew and parted out after the owner had an accident with it...
