With just over three years to go before retirement at American Airlines, I am ready to re-enter general aviation. Last flew a small airplane in 1983...a brand new A36. I am, along with my family, so looking forward to having our own airplane (1st time owner) and enjoying the freedom and flexibility it will introduce.
I was hired by Piedmont Airlines (many mergers ago) in 1984 and have enjoyed a wonderful airline career but, after 36 years 9 months, I will be more than ready to put Part 121 behind me. I started in general aviation and will happily end in general aviation.
With that being said, I just signed a purchase agreement on a 1978 A36. The pre-buy will be accomplished within the next few weeks. We intend to have air conditioning installed, along with new paint and interior. We will have some upgraded avionics installed, also.
We plan to base our ‘new’ airplane @ KLEX. After some lengthy dual and ground schools, to become thoroughly reaquainted with the A36, our most frequently visited destinations will be Southport, NC (my home) along with Sarasota, FL and Rolla, MO.
It is great being able to tap into the wealth of knowledge and experience, here at BeechTalk.
Regards,
Mark Donnally

Welcome Mark,

I was also hired in 1984. I’ll look for you on the ramp at KSUT.

Forrest,

That’s great...I’ll look forward to meeting you.

I learned to fly @ KSUT when it was a grass (mostly sand) strip with an old single wide trailer as the FBO. We get back often so, the A36 will make that easier. There are several current, and retired, guys in the SUT/ILM area. I was based in ILM, on the 737, in 1985.

Is that your V-tail, in the pic? Nice paint...makes me think you may have attended a school in Chapel Hill.

Hi Mark,

I also am an airline type with an impeding forced furlough in 2019. I was hired in 1978 at the young age of 24 but still working for the Widget airline currently in school on the Airbus A350.

I have spent the last 12 years as a Captain on the B747-400 and flew the last revenue B747-400 from ICN to DTW last December. To say it was a very bittersweet moment is an understatement. She was a cruiseliner in the air... plundering along at .85M.

When I flew one to the desert (boneyard) is was analogous of taking your loving pet to the vet for her "final flight west". This loved one was a loyal companion for so many years but it was time for her to go. You knew it was the "humane" thing to do, but it didn't ease the pain of losing something so dear!!

I own a 1980 A36TC and absolutely love flying her with our typical mission of 2 to 3 hour leg lengths. I am wanting to add tip tanks but the Admiral of our family says "we are stopping" to "rest" or whatever... . Long legs have never bothered me and I like LOTS of fuel.

Hey... did I mention... one of the best things about the A36... is you are ALWAYS number ONE on the Nonrev list!! I have never had to take the "next flight". :dancing:

Fly safe... come see us in West Tennessee

Rusty,

The 74 is a beautiful machine and I’m sure, satisfying to fly. As we say, over at Brand X...accept the Bus for what it is. Resistance is futile. :bang:

I’ll bet you’re right on that non-rev thingy. I’m sure I’ll also miss the TSA checkpoints.

Mark

Welcome Mark! You made a great choice for Bonanza model- but I might be a bit biased.
I think you will really enjoy flying the A36 again. It's not too far fetched to say when you get comfortable with the plane-you can slide your SOP to on speed, glideslope and config by 100 ft now :D

Greetings Mark, and welcome! There’s a nice search engine on this site and lots of frequent visitors who know the answer if you fail to find it. Looks like I’m the most recent hire on this thread so far since I was hired in 1986. I am commuting from Nashville to MIA on the 757/767. We should all get together for a mini-union meeting.

Jeff...SouthernAire Restaurant at the Houston County airport on the Tennessee River is a good spot. I often see lots of BNA locals coming for breakfast (open on weekends)

Mark... I am slowly being assimilated to the frenchy way of doing things but ONLY two engines and what is this thing they call an ETP?? :tape: :D

Yessir, been there and concur with your findings.

Mark, there are probably plenty here that would give you an introductory flight in the A36 just for asking. If you buy one before Max’s memorial BBQ, come on down to Knoxville and meet a bunch of us. viewtopic.php?f=35&t=143995&hilit=Max

The idea of the Cranky Bonanza Pilots Union meeting for the $300 hamburger sounds like a blast. We could have official ID/Lanyards made up. An airline guy would have to be the President because, airline guys are the most talented complainers (remember the old joke...every Wednesday?) SouthernAire sounds like a great place. I’m thinking a Delta 74 driver would be a good leader.

I’m going to demo the airplane on Wednesday morning and I’ll take pics. We are going to demo a G36, tomorrow afternoon, just to see if my wife and/or daughters can ride in the back without projectile vomiting.

Thank you for the offer to demo BT member rides. It does not surprise me that folks would be so helpul and sharing. I will try to be as decent. Also, thanks for the warm welcome back to GA.

Hey Mark,
Welcome from another Widget guy. I'm based right up the road in CVG. I'm in the process of closing on a B36TC.

Matthew,

Congratulations...that’s awesome! I find, as a 1st time buyer, I’m over the moon excited about our A36. I’ve scheduled Cabin Comfort Plus installation, along with paint, interior and the addition of a Garmin 750, digital audio panel, EDM900 and a new 6 place intercom. The airplane already had a Garmin 650 and GTX 345 Xponder.

My wife is about to rip the checkbook out of my hands.

Enjoy your new purchase.

Mark

Mark,

It sounds like you are going to have a very very nice airplane. I am excited to see the finished product!!
