Tj,

I have an IFD540 and in general I love it. I would like to add an IFD440 to replace my number two which is a KX-155 but there is a problem. The IFD540 has a noticeable delay between when you press the PTT and when you can talk. This has been somewhat of a problem in formation flight because the transmissions are relatively quick. With the IFD540 you have to push the PTT and pause before speaking. Otherwise the front-end of the transmission gets clipped. I have kept my KX-155 for this reason because it does not display this characteristic. This behavior has been reported by myself and several others to Avidyne yet apparently there are no plans to do anything about it. Is there any chance of you pushing the priority up on this? Fix this and an IFD440 goes in the next day.

Thanks,
Jim

Jim,
Are you saying there is a delay between pressing the PTT and the radio actually transmitting, or is the delay in the audio itself? What flavor is the audio panel in your installation?

Yes, there is a slight delay between when you push the PTT and the transmitter comes alive. So if you push and talk quickly the first syllable will be cut off. The audio panel is a PMA450 but this is not an audio panel problem, it is related to the IFD540 (and presumably the IFD440) only. This has been repeatedly discussed on AvidyneLive and confirmed. The software mod done a couple of years ago to speed up the transmitter so it would work with pilot controlled lighting helped but it needs to be sped up further. For those pilots I fly formation with that have Avidyne radios the rule is don't use the Avidyne in formation, switch to another radio. That is why I (reluctantly) keep my KX-155 for the number two.

Thanks,
Jim
