Greetings Everyone, I certainly enjoy reading the wealth of information on this site, lots of wisdom. I have a question; probably stupid but here it goes: I'm 67 years young and high on my bucket list was learning to fly. I'm retiring and would like to obtain my PPL, but, can I or should I take my lessons in a A36 given that's my objective in the first place. I'm not comfortable in a Cessna as I'm 6:3 and 240 pounds. I've always wanted a bonanza and could afford it, just didn't know if it would be wise to use as a trainer? Thank you for your anticipated wisdom.

There a quite a few folks on BT from KCRQ that could chime in and take you on a flight. I have not heard anything bad about the flight school there in the Western Flight building and did see a fair number of students............... .....just don't go voting for no more damn security would you

My opinion - worth exactly what you paid for it - If a Bonanza is what you definitely want then buy one and train in that airplane. As long as you're comfortable with the financial side of training that way and you are willing to spend more hours in the airplane before your first solo (even if your insurance company doesn't require a few more hours it will take longer to solo a complex, high performance airplane than it would a basic trainer) then do it this way. I would just advise you take a lesson or two before you actually spend the money for an airplane just to be sure you really do enjoy flying light planes.

Thank you both for your comments. In regards to BT readers at KCRQ I hope to hear from a few. Cheers.

They list about half a dozen CFIs who do Bonanza work. I've taken instruction from two of them, a few years back. The CFIs at Plus one are independent, so I'm sure most would do instruction outside of the club. Their numbers are even on the Plus One site. http://www.plusoneflyers.org/fleet/mont ... 742-n6056qhttp://www.plusoneflyers.org/fleet/mont ... em/98-n7du

5 years ago, i would have said no. Now, almost 65 and with a health scare last year, i say : heck yes, go for it. it will take a bit longer, and cost a bit more, but that isn’t an issue if you want to pursue your dream at age 67. Find a great instructor who knows Bonanza’s, many resources here for that. There will be many side benefits: you will probably develop a passion not only for flying but for your airplane as well. And you will have an incredible flying machine when you’re done taking you to all sorts of interesting places. Other side benefit: you’re going to have friends you can call on everywhere in the country. Are you sufficiently mobile to make it in and out of the cockpit of a Bonanza?

Scott, to answer your question directly: YES, you absolutely can get your PPL in an A36. It will take longer than in a C-150, but as you point out that's not an option. Besides, every hour will be not only fun, but directly applicable to what you intend to do after you get your license.
In fact, if you were in the SE US, you would be my target student. Someone who owns their own plane or has the $$$ to buy one, and wants to take instruction (PPL, Comm, Inst, etc.) in THEIR plane. Take the previous advice and get your medical sooner rather than later, the GO FOR IT!!!

Both paths are doable and the advice you've gotten is good on both sides. You might want to consider a third option of "both." Think about doing your initial training and private certificate in a traditional training AC and then train for your instrument rating in your own Bonanza. Cheaper. You'll know whether flying light AC is your thing before buying an AC. You'll better know your mission. You'll more learn how to fly airplanes versus just the one. You'll be able to see and fell the differences and articulate why you like X better than Y. You can start training now w/o being rushed to find an AC now vs a methodical search for the just right AC.

Wow! Great advice and thank you to William, Vincent, Sidney, Luc, Don, Paul, Jon, Tom and David. I apologise if I left anyone off. I appreciate the encouragement and very sound advice. I'll get my medical first and go from there. Special thanks to Sidney for his incredible story on the "training" forum.
