Too late for an NZ flying safari business - http://www.flyinn.co.nz/ This operation is in the next valley south from Omarama and they have a great reputation for conducted power plane vacations around NZ. They always have a booth at Oshkosh.

And from what I understand, a fast track for the FAA and the NZ CAA “paperwork” is an oxymoron.

A turbo-normalized Bonanza is the pinnacle of piston flying, imho. But it might be “too much plane” for NZ skies, since your distances are relatively short and terrain is mostly well below 10,000’ msl.

The trouble with a BT tour of NZ is that there are so few Beech products in NZ, and not many more if the fleet is widened to include other brands. Then much smaller if we consider just the planes that might be rented out to expert BTer pilots. And yes, then there is the huge paper mountain you alluded to.

The problem with getting above weather is that you eventually have to get back down. A turbo plane opens a wide array of new flight plan opportunities, but it also brings complex new challenges and decisions as well. In NZ, the weather is very complex micro climates, fast changing, and usually damp enough to make IMC and even ice a concern, even in summer.

And yes, it is a big stretch from NZ to anywhere – akin to flying from the U.S. Mainland to Hawaii, or even to Europe via Greenland and Iceland. A step too far for most of us.

OK, good that someone is doing it.

There is some new blood in our CAA and they are becoming more progressive currently. Movement in the right direction. Bring on Part 23 down under. https://www.caa.govt.nz/assets/legacy/a ... ewrite.pdf

A fair summary of the weather Jim. Even puppy IFR still leaves you with occasional ice issues. I think you actually need quite a lot of plane down here. It does make for a number of STC examinations. Hence the Miller, R/STOL Twinkie with tips tanks, wet wings and maybe Phill Air nacelle tanks http://www.phill-air.com/ added sits on the top of the certified list for this couple currently. No FIKI though but the 1300 odd ASDR at ISA is meaningful for our strips. :btt:

The New Southern Skies PBN initiative http://www.nss.govt.nz/the-plan should be a positive overall as will (we hope) all of the new RNAV approaches to smaller fields once we have SBAS (WAAS) up and running.

Believe it or not some of the best glider flying I have had is actually in the North Island flying sea breeze fronts on the west coast with a light easterly gradient closing the loop. Ridge flying with out the rocks. Also FL 200 + is easily achievable in wave behind the Tararuas/Ruahines.

Our family farm is in the Wairarapa which is right in the lee of the NWer.

You will have to come and say hello this 'winter' Jim?

One would be hard pressed to operate a better flying safari operation than Matt and Jo at Flyinn NZ. They're located on South Island, about 10 miles east of Wanaka, so there could be an opportunity to do something similar on the north perhaps.

My wife and I had a bucket list flying holiday with Flyinn NZ in January 2013. It was an 8 day exploring tour of the South Island in a Cessna 172, with daily fly-outs to interesting destinations. Hard to explain the thrill of flying into Milford Sound, landing on a beach or flying to Stewart Island. It was easily our best ever holiday.

A 180 hp 172 is the perfect airplane for this type of off airport, short strip flying. Much better than a Bonanza since flight legs are very short.

We also spent 5 days driving through the South and North Island and saw enough that we've resolved to return for several months once we retire. It simply is that beautiful, with so much to see and do. It's also gliding and fly fishing nirvana.

Welcome to BT Jason!

Thanks Joe,

And thank you for sharing those. It is a pleasure to be so comprehended.

I just had to share this from the family farm today!
