Similarly to Chris my journey has been

M20F
M20J
BE36
D50E

The Mooney's are great but can be tight especially with a growing family. You could skip my intermediate step and just go right on up to a twin. But really, I think the A36 is one on the best planes out there for a do everything airplane. Make sure you fly one and you will be surprised about how light the controls feel. I hauled 6 people (3 adults-3 kids) with partial tanks and was limited to around 4-500 miles. Mine was overweight with leather, well insulated interior, AC and lots of avionics. I miss the plane but if you goal is only 5 years it should do well. Then after 5 years and a growing family you will NEED a Twin Bonanza.

Welcome, Tre!

Definitely scan the Beech Singles section regarding some of your questions, but also the "For Sale" section for opportunities - or contact someone like Neal Schwartz in these pages who may have lines of sight into things not posted there.

Love my A36 - used to be one of 3 in a row at my field, but the middle guy moved a few weeks ago... Very sad because I loved having him as a hangar neighbor.

I have tips, VGs, Gamis, etc., in my '91 A36... Would definitely watch the weight, especially if you're in an area with higher elevations and/or temps. She's not really a true 6-seater, but I love having the barn doors, and yes, I have the STC for the tips, but W&B isn't a STC question, as I'm sure you're aware...

Best wishes with your search! Post pics when you land one!

Doc

Real world question: what is the actual life of the Bo engines? The IO-360 in my Mooney has a 2000h TBO, but will last well beyond that. It is a bullet proof engine. Is a 1800h engine run out totally on a Bo?

Highly variable. People run the big continentals well over TBO. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

I think the idea of a B55 (or even 58) is an excellent one. You will be able to get the items on your list for $100. Fly it at bonanza speeds and the costs will not be dramatically different. And yes, you can handle a Baron just fine

Thus far I have had great over TBO experience with my pair of IO470s. AT 260HP each, they are not stressed much at all considering the basic design is taken to 300HP in NA form. Not to mention the belt driven alternators that won't spew their guts into the engine if the alternator is not perfectly serviced and installed.

~2200 SFRMN and ~1800SMOH

Just overhaul and keep the external accessories in good shape (cylinders, mags, fuel system, hoses, starter, etc.)

I have no complaints about the longevity I have gotten from my IO470s.

Mike

Hi Tre:

Welcome to BT. One of the first things we do here is decide if we want to eat you.

Not to worry, it's standard procedure.

But at some point, you'll have an encounter with a Troll Hunter.

Best advice:

1. DO NOT!!!! Under any circumstances make direct eye contact with the Troll Hunter, or you will be eaten.

2. Answer all questions truthfully, or you will be eaten.

3. Use your actual, God-Given name, or you will be eaten.

4. Make sure your identity, your pilot qualifications, and ownership of that Mooney are real, and available for verification by the Troll Hunters, or you will be eaten.

If the Troll Hunters decide not to eat you, they, and the rest of us will become your friends. But probably not until then.

Good luck, and may God go with you.

Yeah, I pretty well prefer to take trolls on head and and with a great deal of sarcasm. Most trolls don't get sarcasm, but that is part of the fun. So my title was pretty well by design to flush out the trolls. I keep phasers set to stun most of the time though.
So happy hunting!

Tre'

And in case you would like verification N112PH.... yes, that really is my LLC, still can't believe my wife let me get away with that one!

You have to pay double dues to love a mooney here.

My father in law has a mooney tls/bravo, he sure loves it. He's flying the wings off it.

One thing that really amazed me was the comfort of the back seat when I chose to sit there once. That stretched cabin really felt good for me (6'2", 235). Completely changed my mind about everything I've heard about the mooney comfort level.

It's a great airplane.

On the A36 series, if you are using all 6 seats you need the Approach Aviation Mod that gives you luggage space behind the last seats. Otherwise it's just suitcases on laps.

Suggest a Baron or similar if you need all 6 seats and much luggage. The advantage of the twin is the luggage space in front, but read Mike Caban and learn how to run two engines almost as efficiently as one.

Well, I am a Mooney man no more... OK, that is not true... but I am really trying hard to not be a Mooney man anymore..... and if you will just by my Mooney I will be able to say I am a Mooney man no more!!!

But I found my next plane... very well may be my last plane! 69 e-161 I now call my own. (Wife still hasn't named her yet, but it will happen).

So that is it... I am an official member of the forum now. Not just some Mooney poser.

But I do have two planes at this moment.. No really... I own two airplanes now... do you want to buy her!?! Really, she is for sale. m20F, come on, you know you want her.
