My name is Eric Smyth from Cedar Rapids, IA. I am an A&P/IA over 30 years and currently maintain a Bell 407 at the local hospital. I have maintained several Beechcraft airplanes throughout the years and thoroughly enjoy the craftsmanship applied during their build process. Looking to start a local niche maintenance shop specializing in Bonanza's. Any suggestion on problem areas owners have experienced or opinions on if this would even work. Retired Army 24+ years so be honest I have a thick skin.
Have a great day.
Eric M Smyth

Eric, Welcome. Thanks for your service. Are you looking to service Beechcraft based from an airport/hangar?

Yes sir, in search of hanger and all correct tooling. Hopefully CID. Just became a American Bonanza Society member and looking at their training this winter.
I have experience the sheet metal arena also.
Appreciate your kind words.

Welcome to BT, Eric. Re: the American Bonanza Society... There's lots of info on the website, including an archive of the newsletter/magazines back to its inception in 1967. They conduct the ABS Maintenance Academy specifically for educating A&Ps on maintaining these airplanes. (Not just Bonanzas, but Barons, Debonairs, and Travel Airs.) Also, be on the lookout for an ABS Service Clinic near you. Pointing out "things to looks for" is what they do. Finally, Go Navy! Beat Army! and thank you for your service!

Welcome, Eric!
Where are you thinking you'll be based?
Have you checked on what/who the local/regional Beech specialists are?
Many of them get great followings - some of the bigger issues that have been discussed in these pages are:
Pricing - tend to be MUCH higher than the non-specialty shops - yes, I know, you get what you pay for, but sometimes it's debatable how much extra you're paying someone who should know the ins and outs and maybe take less time pulling something apart and putting it back together. I've also seen the bill grow between estimate and the final bill as well as read similar stories.
My way or the highway. Some of the most renowned refuse to do the work if they don't get to do it their way. Tough attitude to swallow.
Backlog - availability when you need them can be a challenge, even for more minor things that you could but don't want to do yourself like brakes, compression checks, oil changes, etc. Easier to get someone who's not a specialty to do it.
Usually they're VERY knowledgeable and up to speed on the latest SBs and ADs, but not proactive about informing you - we get that from here in BT, Savvy, AVweb, and other sources. Would be better to know what the implications are to you, specifically.
Just a few starting thoughts. I'm sure there's more.
Doc
