I am NEW to BeechTalk as of today

I've stalked at Cessna.org and Cessna-Pilots.net for about a year

BeechTalk was suggested to me just today

My 1977 C182Q has 1,520 hours, fresh from an AirPlains IO-550-D Conversion and is just finishing up getting a Garmin Panel Makeover

Then paint and a new interior

Plan is fly 300 to 800 mile missions for both business and pleasure, hoping to end up with a 150+ knot airplane

Went with the C182 due to past ownership of such and wanting to carry big loads, being age 58 and wanting to fly for maybe the next 20+ years I was looking for simplicity, and not wanting the ongoing and insurance costs associated with retractable and turbocharged aircraft

Hopefully

I looked long and hard at a lot of options, every aircraft needed "something"

Found this low time hull that was flyable / in annual, but in need of everything, got it purchased very reasonable - then proceeded to build what I wanted, albeit at a substantial cost

Here's to hoping I stay healthy and financially able get to fly it for the next 20 years or so !!!

A lightly loaded 182 with a 550 must be an absolute rocketship getting off the runway.

I am sure lots of us would enjoy seeing pictures and getting updates on the progress.

What all is going in your new panel?

Welcome, Mike!

Better make the C182 a RG if you're looking for 150+ KTS!

Post pics of the project!

I'll try to answer several questions above in this response

1) IO-550-D = Rocket Ship ? I was told at 60 knots they got 1,700 feet of climb - I'll be happy as a clam if I can Cruise Climb it at 1,000 feet per minute at 90 to 100 knots

2) Takes an 182 RG to get to 150+ ? Again, I'm told at 5,000 feet and 18 gph, with gap seals in place it Trued Out at 156 knots - and I'm replacing the wheel pants as I paint with Knots 2 U Wheel Pants, Exhaust Fairing and Cowling Fairing - here's to hoping for maybe a few more knots ?

3) What's going in the New Garmin Panel ?
JPI EDM 930
G500
GTN 750 / 650
GTX 345
350c Audio Panel
Flight Stream 510
S-TEC Fifty Five X

Flint Aero Internals added by AirPlains = 98 gallon useable

GAMI's

So, I'm set for LOP should I so choose

Fully realizing I'll be viewed as "not too bright" putting all of that into a Legacy / 40-year old 182..... Ya got to remember, the airplane needed EVERY thing, and I started with a very / low time / 1,515 hour hull in great condition - once you get started, it's hard to quit, and every time I turned around, "for just another $1,000 or $2,000 I could add more

Case in point, I struggled buying a used 430 WAAS for $4,000 or more, when I bought a GTN 650 for $6,500

Plus I benefited from two different 2016 Garmin Rebate Programs, 2016 Oshkosh and 2016 Christmas Season - combined over $6,000 in Garmin Rebates

I looked an Restart 182s that had non WAAS G1000 platforms that needed $35,000 upgrades ?

If I get to fly it for 10 to 20 years, I'll be able to justify the speed to myself

I plan to do Alaska, Canada, some Mexico, Florida and the Bahamas - our version of an RV..... more affordable than a twin or Big 6 Place with a legal 1,150 pound useful load, and about as much as I want to load otherwise, as that IO-550 will lift anything, however, you have to respect the structural integrity of the airplane along the way

I'm a 1,900 hour, IFR, ASEL / MEL pilot with 800 hours multi

I just didn't want to afford a Twin, but would have liked one.....

Welcome to Beechtalk!
Nice looking panel.
I got here late in my flying 'career' when I lucked into buying a S35 and happened to come across BT. It has been an addiction since the beginning for me.
Now I too fly a 182, with a PPonk engine and speed mods and upgraded panel (about to improve even more with two more Aspens and a L-3 9000). The short field takeoff is amazing and it's not hard to get 150kts.
I definitely miss the Baron, but I agree with you on the cost factor for twins.
Enjoy!

Have you looked into the BRS chute for the 182?
