Aircraft: T-34B
I have not flown in 35 years, but I'm on a mission. My happiest times in the air were in a Navy T-34B in VT-5 at Saufley Field in 1976. I can't go back in time and relive those days, that's true, but I'd like to have a detailed model to remind me, and to share with family since I don't have enough money right now to buy or rent the real thing.

I'm going to work with a custom model builder and the model has to be identical to one that I actually flew. My first choice is "Triple Nickel", a T-34B in orange and white that had 555 painted on the nose.

Since I don't have the Navy Bu number (which of course will be painted on the a/c) I have been searching for the actual plane or at least a photo of it. Does anyone have either or is there a assignment list of the VT-5 numbers (500-560)?

Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome, Bill!

Here is a link that is not exactly what you're looking for, but it might be helpful.

http://www.joebaugher.com/navy_serials/ ... ies17.html

The T-34B BUNOs seem to start at 140667 with remarks for many of them, including some that went to VT-5, although the remarks don't have a solid cross-reference between BUNO and MODEX.

Bill, didn't the Ops bubbas put the BuNo in your logbook? Every command I was in did.

I know they probably wouldn't have put the nose/tail number in, but you could check the BuNo with the link Jim posted and go from there. You never know what you'll find.

And, welcome to BT!

:cheers:

I do have all the Bu numbers in my logbook, but no mention of the side number (nose number). Unfortunately the link given above uses the Bu numbers but likewise gives no reference to the side numbers (nose numbers).

If I only had a list of VT-5's side number assignments,
but I sure haven't been able to find one.

Well its been five or so years since I was on BT, I sold my Debonair around that time and bought myself a Maule which in my view was far better suited to our 1300' strip.
The Maule has great short field capabilities and a far better performer than the Deb out of the strip, but I miss the Beech enormously.
I have learnt a lot about short field ops in the Maule, high ROD landings into tight areas but it is time to move on. Looks like I have a buyer for the Maule and am now looking for a V tail to run out of the same old strip.
Thinking an S35 but open to advice.

Ah... there are a lot of cryptic remarks with many of the BUNOs. I was hoping there there might be some useful correlation, but I guess not.

What about the picture of the T-34B on Wikipedia? It is 557, VT-5, BUNO 140950. The joebaugher.com link says that 140667-140956 was assigned to a run of T-34Bs. Do you think the side numbers went in sequence with the BUNOs, i.e. 556 140949, and your 555 as 140948?

What about any memorable flights in 555? Some singularly random thing like a very short hop aborted for weather, flying on your birthday, having a night emergency, something that might stand out in your logbook enough to give you some degree of confidence that the entry was likely 555? :shrug:

I have turned up a few matches of side number to Bu number, i.e. 140737=504
140868=552
140910=531
140919=500
140950=557
144090=562
If there's a pattern I don't see it. Am I missing it?

I think my flight in 555 just stands out because it was a glorious spring Pensacola blue sky with scattered
clouds and everything I was doing just seemed to jive.

I'll keep looking just a little longer and then I may go with
500 or 557 since I flew both and have a photo of each. I didn't take the photos. Back then in 1976 there were no cell phones and I had no camera.
