Just retired from the Navy flying the mighty F/A-18. Currently flying a BE58 for a contractor servicing a Navy mission. A recent new hire with United Airlines.

Eventually I would like a plane to haul my family of six to new adventures. Want overwater capability, all wx, 200+ knots. Maybe second year pay?

Barons are nice, but as you know the 6 people in any light twin need to pack light in order to fit everything in. In addition to the Baron, you might consider the Cessna twins, the 310's can be had with turbos for altitude and speed and the 340 and 400 series have huge load hauling capability.

Do yourself a favor and look at Tom Drew's 340 for sale here on BT $125,000. If I had the seats to,fill it would be my first choice.

Welcome Steve
Thank you for your service
We had 5, now 4 as one has graduated and moved out.
If you want to compare the 58 to a 55 we would be pleased to show you ours.
Both are great machines for sure.

Welcome to BT Steve!
Barons are great, I enjoy mine. With the needs you list, you might want to consider other aircraft also.

Your subject line says you want a Baron and elsewhere you say you want 200+ knots. That pretty much limits you to a 58P or a 58TC. A Colemill 55 will do 200+ knots but with your family of six that does not seem practical. I frequently fly my 58P with six although it is pretty tight back there and I have to leave off a lot of fuel to do it. Still, if you specifically want a Baron I think it a good choice. A 58TC will haul about 250 lbs more and has the barn doors, good for your family of six. But to get 200+ knots from a 58TC you have to get up to 15K feet or more which means oxygen.

Or step into the other Church of C414 land and get your 200KTS and six capacity and closer to but not really an "All Wx" bird.

Not sure any Piston GA plane is an "All Wx" bird in my opinion

But "All WX" is in the eye of the beholder

I have a friend with a 58TC, so that is my frame of reference. 200 knots is just a number, I should have said "-ish". I have two under 13 and two under 5. My weights should be fine and I don't need to be able to use the full 190 gal. 166gal range would be plenty, both for the littles and my sanity. Not trying to cross the Atlantic.

Concur that the 400 series Cessna twins are great. I have time in a 421, very nice.

Not making a decision today, maybe in a year or so.

As I'm sure you will research, the 55 vs 58 have their pluses and minuses, but almost all are based on personal choice. Few will do an honest 200 ktas. Some considerations:

All weather: Baby Barons are not FIKI. A limited number of E55s can be upgraded with a factory kit. All 58s can be upgraded, many new 58s are FIKI. Fully de-iced (boots and alcohol) do well in light ice, for escape. TKS equipped is a good option, costly and rare.

58 vs 55 debate could be endless. An edge in handling to the 55. The barn doors of the 58 are a plus--for some a must have. However some passengers don't like sitting backward, plus the seat rails in a 55 allow for much more 2nd row leg room vs a 58, when carrying 4. Big nose baggage on. C/D/E55/58 is a plus over the B55. All choices to make.

Some feel the B55 engine is more stout. B55 engine mounts are a mechanic headache, but the bigger engine mounts need to be inspected.

Generally systems are dirt simple (ex-pressurization). Some prefer the integrated tanks of the post 1974 (?) Barons. If you can handle twisting two fuel valves twice in a flight, there is a plus over the "on and forget it" style: main and aux tanks make it easy to fill and fly with no fill- fuel/weight and balance/range gymnastics. For example: I've got 134gal full or 74 gal with just mains. So pax/bags is 1000lb full with a 775nm no-wind range, or 1,350 pax/bags and 350nm range. So simple I rarely calculate anything.

Happy hunting!

Welcome, Steve...

Hard to track the mission, but since you already have specs, sounds like you're getting some good pointers.

Maybe click on the mentor.php link from the menu above and find a few in your area. Looks like you already have one offer from Rick, but who a great opportunity to not only see (and perhaps fly) the birds you're looking at, but get more on specs and flip through a POH or two?

Best wishes with your search!

Doc

Welcome!

Beech gear can take a Navy landing, in case you have flashbacks. :duck:

But, check your mission with 6 real people as others have suggested.

Dan <sorry, couldn't resist>
(no, I'm not AF... just a welcome poke!)

Hey Steve,

Welcome to United! There's quite a few of us here on BeechTalk. Have you started class yet? What aircraft/base?

Shoot me an email or PM anytime if you want to get on the phone to discuss Barons (or GA in general).
