New user here.

Came online for some advice for my A36, that I have owned for over thirty years. Love the airplane and now it's time for some TLC. I am looking for an engine overhaul and also debating doing ADSB at the same time and wanted to come here to read and discuss options that others have found.

Time to start browsing and asking questions.

I did a Firewall Forward last year - began with the Millennium Cylinder AD and got worse from there... Went with a Ram overhauled engine with new Millennium Nickel-coated Cylinders based on availability and I like the Ram crankshaft... Used to have a Victor in there, which served me well, but they never responded to my queries.

The prop replacement was from the original 1991 McCauley, which had been overhauled a couple of times, to a New Hartzell Scimitar-bladed setup. The dry hub was corroded and the blades were at the end of their ability to be cut, so given the hub overhaul and the need to replace the assembly anyway in a few years...

Governor was overhauled and a few other odd-and-ends... Big bill, but I feel fortunate to have a practically new bird again...

Welcome, I suggest you post pictures because we love pictures. Also, give some detail as to your current configuration and most of us are really good at suggesting ways for you to spend money on your plane. :D

Hi John,

In my last few years of research for my current aircraft(a 1976 A36- see Intros forum for photos), I had the chance to pour over all kinds of logbooks, exchange information with engine rebuilders, and speak with them personally, and on several occasions talk to the good folks at Continental. My current airplane has 1690 hours on a factory reman Continental IO520BB12B. It's had three cylinders replaced at 800 hours and a repeat of #2 at 1500 hours. At the current time, there is nothing wrong with this engine as measured by oil consumption, compression tests, oil analysis, or boreoscope inspection. But soon I'll face the same issue and this is what I think I'm going to do.

This engine has performed well, but when it's time I think I'll send it over to Western Skyways for overhaul. In my my research, I've found that this this company carries a great reputation based on discussions with owners and brokers. I've trended data from several aircraft I've researched that have both Western Skyways and factory reman engines and it's hard to tell the difference. It seems that some Continental factory engines tend to have cylinder issues around 7-800 hours but there's no way to tell how they were operated. I tended to Value aircraft with Western Skyways engines on par with a/c that had Remans.

I did a pre buy on a nice T210(sacrilege to admit now!) that had a Western Skyways engine in it and it was a great engine, great records with little reliability problems after 900 hours. But I found that the prop was bent - an unknown to the owner incident. I didn't buy the plane obviously and lost $1500 for the inspection, but learned a great deal about the company. Btw I got to see the quote for the IRAN - 10k. Ouch.

Other Beechtalk members may have other opinions so be patient I'm sure you'll get more advice!

I had my 520 quoted by Western Skyways very recently at about $34k with new cylinders and accessories with a 6 week turn around time.

Also, talk to James Towle at Continental. He has helped me a great deal and can answer just about any question you could ever think of. He has a lot of knowledge regarding crank case issues, VAR crankshaft ads, and the like- all by serial numbers. I think a reman from them is around $42k.

So call a few people, it's helped me learn a great deal about the process and gain more confidence going forward.

Because of a cylinder AD I had to replace my IO-520 with a new factory rebuild from Continental. I only had less than 200 hours left before a major overhaul so it made no sense to top it. I called John Towle at Continental and he was super responsive to my needs to rush the exact engine to Baker Aviation in New Smyrna Beach. If you are a Bonanza owner like me (I bought my A36 in 1989) I would recommend talking to either Bob Ripley at Southern Aero Services or Curtis Boulware at Baker Aviation. Both have done annuals on my plane and both are straight up guys who do super work. A few years ago I attended an ABS service weekend at the Continental facility in Fairhope Alabama. Bob Ripley headed the fly-in for Bonanzas and he any and every question a Bonanza owner could ask. By the way, my new engine runs flawlessly. I only wish that Continental had the new nickel cadmium cylinders available last year.
