Hello, all! I am an older pilot who has become current again after 30 years being dormant. I now have the time and a little cash to resume where I left off. While a have a few hours of Bonanza time from my previous flying, I have nothing recent, but wish to purchase my own aircraft (B33 or B35) and pursue an Instrument Rating. I thought that this forum would be great to educate myself on what to look for in a Bonanza, even though I am still considering other AC (Dare I say it? I am enjoying some of the discussion about Mooney and still haven't completely discounted the 182).
Looking forward to learning,
Garry Hawryluk

Welcome, Gary! Lots of wisdom. Several fans of the 182, as well as some Mooney drivers. You are likely to get some fairly unbiased opinions - but also likely to get some biased ones! When you're ready tell us a budget and mission, and we'll tell you why you need a 35, and help you find one....

Hi Nate,
Primary mission at outset is to acquire Instrument Rating, but would likely be doing some VFR cross country while doing so (100-400nm). A lot of X-C would be solo or 1 pax, and eventually with IFR capability. Budget around 60-70K (unless I can find a partner), although I don't know if this is realistic for reasonable time (TT and SMOH), reasonable IFR package, double yoke, no damage hx, etc. etc.
I understand that comparable 182 may be cheaper, and Mooney may be more fuel efficient, but I will listen to any and all opinions. Maintenance and insurance costs also a consideration (I realize that 1 of 3 is fixed gear).

Hi Gilles!
I'll be sure to keep your offer in mind, but it doubt that it would involve much coercion! Are all Beechcraft owners so friendly? If you're ever passing through YWG or YAV, please let me know!
I guess from your comments though that you have no regrets re: Beechcraft? Was it a "done deal" from the start, or did you rule out other options? Cdn registered from the start, or did you import?

Garry Garry, I most definitely will do that, as for regrets absolutely not 1 iota, I flew a c172 for 12 yrs. then in 2000, I just happen to be at the right place at the right time, just when I was looking for something bigger & faster for personal transportation. I actually was looking at 6 paks or single comanche at the time but could not turn down this Bonanza, since it was practically in my back yard. Owner had lost his medical & hadn't flown it for 4 yrs. (legally) but I think he was flying his original Pa11 that he learn in, in 1946. But that's another story. I've never regretted my move, for your mission, very similar to mine, there are none better flying machines.

Cool, I got my PPL at St. Andrews at Uhlrich's school in the old pipers...I think he sold the school some time ago.

Must have been a while ago, Tim. Probably bought out by Winnipeg Aviation who continue the Piper tradition. I am currently flying with Harv's Air who took over Winnipeg Flying Club's hangars and buildings. If you're interested in a walk down memory lane Harv's is prominently featured on You Tube and has a lot of videos of YWG and YAV. Where are you located now?
