Hello,

I have a 1970 Baron 95-B55 equipped with 2 engine monitor (CGR 30 P). All my cylinders are stable in term of CHT, there are variation during flight but soft variations.

But, I observe during my last flight fluctuations of 10 to 50 °F (between 300 to 350) permanently and variation each second on cylinder N°2 of my right engine.

I suppose it is a probe issue.

But can it be first signal of a future problem on my cylinder ?

Bonjour de Paris, France

Patrick

You're right, it is a connection or probe issue. CHT cannot change all that fast. Note how quickly/slowly the CHT rises on takeoff, and with a simulated engine failure? That's the fastest you'll ever see a CHT move, normally. Now think what would happen if you suddenly snipped (cut) the wire?

a good way to check is to swap probes, if the problem moves then it is the probe, if the problem stays, then try to swap the wire harness to a different cylinder. you can ground run to verify and switch parts faster than a test flight

I encountered this problem and it was not the probe but rather a loose connection in the harness leading to the probe. The nut securing the electrical connection was just loose enough to allow the thing to move around under vibration.

Bad probe or loose wire?

If engine power is good...

Patrick,

I chased a similar problem for years in my previous airplane by swapping probes, replacing the suspect probe, and chasing wires. Obviously this is the right place to start, but in my case it ended up being an alternator that wasn't correctly grounded.
