I've had the itch for a G5 - or two - ever since they got STC'd for certified aircraft. There were some early problems with the G5 AI, reported in the "Garmin G5" thread. Then the GAD 29B for the HSI to have A/P support finally started shipping and my interest is waaayyy up!

But I wonder - are the problems that we heard about earlier generally solved, and/or will there be new ones with the HSI components of this pair?

No doubt there have been some trouble-free installs (hopefully a big majority), but since I'm worrying about being one of the ones that might have problems (stuff seems to happen with me :(, whom of you would be will to confirm problems or help convince me that it's unlikely at this stage.

I'm really hoping to get there on this. A bunch of years of the vacuum gyros makes me want to get modern here.

Thanks in advance,
Doug Lefeve

I am getting dual G5’s and an Aera 660 installed in the next couple weeks. I am hoping that the early confusion is over.

I have flown about 100 hours behind my G5 AI over the past year and I have never had a problem. I am operating with the most up-to-date firmware too.

Can anyone confirm the G5 in HSI mode will provide all functionality to a King KFC200 or 150 autopilot?

Very much so, all voltage outputs for heading bug, course pointer, course deviation indicator, vertical deviation indicator, roll-steering when flight computer is in heading mode.

I just had two G5's installed and was told by the shop the mounting could not be flush. I also have the plastic panel overlay so it all blends nicely. I will try and post a photo shortly....
