Anyone with this set up?
I’m thinking of adding tip tanks, (Osborne 20 gals) to my V35, which currently has an S-Tec 55x AP,
1- Will I have to re-adjust the controller or other components, on the AP or will it have any bearing on this at all?

2- Operation wise, the tip tanks will have tranfer pump(s) so how do you guys operate the Tips? eg.. left main 2hrs, then switch to right main, and turn the left transfer pump to left main, till the left tip is empty?
Then, after 2 hrs on the right main, transfer from right tip to right main, while pulling from the left main again?
Does this make sense?

Gilles,
Stec 50 with 15 gal BDS transfer system.
1-No adjustment to the AP was necessary when I added the tip tanks.
2-I almost always burn 90 minutes out of the left main, then switch to right main and run for 30 minutes, then turn both transfer pumps on and run until just before landing or tips are empty, whichever occurs first..

don't know about the stec but my 15g bds tips procedure is run on L main for 1hr then 1hr10min on R main and turn on both pumps for 1hr+ until emptied into the mains, however before start up flip on the master and tip pumps and listen to make sure both pumps are operational.

Thanks for the reply guys,
Tom, glad to hear the tips does not effect the AP.

Gary, looks like both of you guys use both mains for a at least an hr, before activating the transfer pumps.
Do the tranfer pumps stop automatically when the mains are are full or do they keep pumping, even after the mains are full and pump fuel overboard? :ohno:
not a good thing :bugeye:

Gilles,
My xfer pumps don’t know how much space is available in the mains, so they will continue to operate until I turn the switches off. Therefore, if the main is full any fuel transferred to that tank will discharge overboard through the vent system.
If you are on a long flight, like 4 hours or more, it’s a very simple operation. It becomes more complicated if you are tankering fuel and only making short flights
It’s also much easier to manage with 40 gallon mains than the smaller 20 and 25 gallon mains with fuel systems that return fuel only to the left main...
Make sense?

Tom,
Thanks for clearing up what I suspected, now I can devise a better plan on fuel management when I get the tanks.
With my existing 40 gal mains, on a long trip, I usually do 1 hr on a main, left or right, depending on my load, then switch and run 2hrs on the other side, then switch back to my take off tank, and land with that one, about 4 hrs max.

i run 10 minutes shorter on the left because it's my takeoff tank and higher power burns a little more fuel, my right tank is next at cruise altitude. my pumps do not auto shutoff but i understand it doesn't hurt them to run dry, however 10 minutes after i can't see any more fuel in the tip tank sight window i turn them off.

Makes perfect sense Gary, I'll have to find a way to determine when the tips are empty, so I know when to turn the pumps off, ( Osbornes do not have a site window/gauge)

Gilles, Your main tank fuel gages will tell you when the trips are no longer transferring fuel. Works just fine...
